Exchange .ost password change log
OK here it goes. I have a client who says an employee of his was able to put a password on his .ost file of his desktop client. The file is normally stored on the exchange server, however, he says the employee put a password on the local computer's file to try to keep people from reading his email. Not the password in outlook, but the password on the .ost file itself. Never heard of this, is this possible, and if so, how can this hinder people from reading email if it is stored on Exchange 2007 server? Thanks.

If someone changed their .ost password on their local machine, would it be under Event, Security, or Application logs? Thanks.

You can't put a password on an ost as its just the cache of the active mailbox. The assumption is that if you are logged into a workstation accessing an Exchange mailbox, you have the necessary permissions to access the offline files under that profile.A pst, however, you can password protect.

There's no password for an .OST file. The OST file is linked to theOutlook profile and the mailbox GUID. Log on to the mailbox using theprofile in the current user's portion of the Registry and you're in --but that's true of the mailbox, too. Why bother with getting access toa local machine if you have access to the mailbox itself?g logged if youdid that to a .PST file.---Rich MatheisenMCSE+I, Exchange MVP--- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP
