Exchange - change way name looks when receiving mail
Hi all,Quick question for those more well versed in MS Exchange Server 2003 than I am...Our display name, if you will, when an e-mail is recieved is simply the name in the active directory - so, if you got an e-mail from me, it would say that it was from Joe Person. I am trying to make it to look like Joe Person (MPD), while keeping the actual e-mail address jperson@domain.com.Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,Dave

Hi Dave, I may be missing something here, so bear with me. When I Joe sends a message to someone else, the "display name" is pulled from the user's Active Directory "display name" attribute (which is on the General property page of the user account). You can put most anything in there you want. This, is of course, how it works for users within the same company / Exchange organization. Are you talking about what the display name looks like when Joe sends to people OUTSIDE of the organization? Exchange has an additional attribute that it allows on a user's properties (on the Exchange Advanced tab) called Simple Display Name. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888416 I have never used this attribute, but I believe what it will allow you to do is for e-mail that is sent OUTSIDE of your organization, the display name that is used will be the information in the Simple Display Name field instead. Is this what you are looking for? Thanks, Jim

Jim,I tried following the instructions in that KB article but I dont have \Use Simple Display Name in the registry to edit. Just to make sure that we're on the same page, what I'm trying to do, is for outside recipients, when jsmith@domain.com sends an e-mail, the display name they see is John Smith (MPD) rather than just John Smith (the way it is now). Thanks in advance,Dave

Hi Dave, You can manually add it: Modify the registry value a. Log on to your Exchange 2003 computer. b. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK. c. Locate, and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIS\ParametersSystem\ d. Create new DWORD Value: Type: DWORD Name: Use Simple Display Name Value: 1 If you want the simple display name to appear in outgoing messages, type 1 in the Value data box. If you do not want the simple display name to appear in outgoing messages, type 0 in the Value data box. e. Quit Registry Editor. After that, please restart the System Attendant service and check the result. Mike

Is it okay if internal recipients see "John Smith (MPD)" also? If so, just change his display name.

I did that - and now all my outgoing e-mail looks like JSMITH. Where do I change it?EDIT: Changing the display name in the active directory doesn't seem to change it either, with the registry edit or without. Thanks in advance,Dave

Hi Dave, Please configure the Simple Display Name by using following steps: 1. Open ADUC and locate the user 2. Right click the user and click Property 3. Under Exchange Advanced, please type the user name (Joe Person (MPD)) which you would like to displayed to external users Note 1: We need to have Preserve senders display name on message on the Internet message setting Note 2: If there are internal users in the To line of the external emails, the Display Name won't change to Simple Display Name. (In one word, the feature only change the display name for Sender, not Recipients Mike

Mike -I have the name edited the way I want it to appear for external users in the exchange advanced tab. I cannot locate the "Preserve sender's display name on message" setting, where can I find this to ensure that it is enabled. Thanks,Dave

Hi, You can locate the option by following steps: 1. Open ESM, expand Global Settings 2. Click Internet Message Formats, on the right panel, double click the Remote Domain 3. Under the Advanced tab, please check whether the Preserve sender's display name on message option has been enabled. By default, it should be enabled. Mike

Mike, et al,That option is enabled, and I still cannot make outgoing messages to external users show they way I would like. Am I missing something? I changed the name in the users properties page under exchange advanced, and nothing...Thanks,Dave
