Exchange03 configuration
my network includes an exchange 03 server with two NICs. One NIC connected to the DMZ and the other NICconnected to my internal network. How should my NICs be configured? Do I need default gateways on both NICs? What do I point to for my DNS? The exchange 03 server has AD and DNS on it. I also have a publicDNS server in my DMZ and my Primary AD is on the internal network. This configuration was setup before I came to this company and seems to be working, but I have experienced some problems. Can anyone help me out? Thanks.

Hi, This is not a very good configuration. This means that you have a domain controller in a DMZ - why have the dmz then?? You can only have one default gateway on a server. Routes on the other network card needs to be created with the route command. If You have a routed internal network I would use one of the internal routers as the default gateway. Use one of the internal AD DNS servers as DNS server and have this server use the DMZ DNS server as a forwarder. What problems do you see? Leif

Hi, Please describe the topology of your network more detailedly, and whats your Exchange problem? We can leverage the chart in the following link to a further understanding on Exchange 2003 topology. Front-End and Back-End Topologies Overview http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997482(EXCHG.65).aspx It seems your issue is more like a networking best practice issue. Here is another resource you can use. http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/list/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.windows.networking.firewall&cat=en_us_5fd2c900-79d6-4c22-b85e-3b28d6c79c2a&lang=en&cr=us I await your reply. Thanks, Elvis

Thanks, What you are all saying confirms what I understand too. Unfortunately I inherited this configuration. I want to change it with the least amount of disruption to my users.
