Exch 2007 Install Fails, can not find old server
Hi, I am in the process of upgrading an existing Win2K, Exch 2000 system to Win2K3, Exch2007, and am doing it in a test environment first. I have successfully upgraded all of my systems to Win2003, Active Directory 2003, and a partial install of Exch 2007. Currently I have the following in the test system: 1) 1 forest level domain controller, Win2K3, name = MMCSOA01a 2) 1 domain level domain controller, Win2K3, name = MSTAPDC2 3) 1 Win2K3 server, 64bit, with Exch2007 installed but without client access or mailbox store (this is where it fails), name = MSTAMSX2 4) 1 Exch2000 old mailbox server, on Win2000 OS, name =MSTAMSX1 5) 1 Windows XP pro client Everything was moving along pretty well after a few bumps in the road, but now im stuck and I dont see anything on the web for the error I am seeing, especially since the error is not numbered. Basically, when I am trying to install the additional roles of client and mailbox storage on the Exch2007 server, it appears to be looking for the Exch2000 server for the offline address book? (See log below, where MSTAMSX2 is the new server and MSTAMSX1 is the old one, and MSTAPDC2 is the domain controller). Physically, the old Exchange Server 2000 is up and running ok in the test environment. The only thing that might add more information is that theold exchange server used to be a domain controller, but I had to demote it so that I could raise the AD level to Win2003. The error message is similar to those seen during my attempts at replication when I used metadata cleanup to remove non-present domain controllers not in my test system. Eventually i got those errors removed. Thanks in advance for any help on this issue. John The following log is the last part of the log - the entries before appear to be ok. Hi, The "DEL:7c5b7244-e5ae-4a45-85ff-a727ecb23c8f" indicated that it finds something in AD - something that is deleted now. Did you check the configuration of the offline book list in the exchange 2000 ESM - try to reconfigure this to make sure that its configuration is written to AD. Leif

Thanks for helping, Leif. Im not sure i understand the ESM acronym or the concept of an offline book list. If i need to reconfigure it, is it something within the Service Manager? Also, just curious, but when did it find out about the other server...is this just something it queried AD during the install? Im not sure i recall telling it that there was another Exch server in the domain.

Yes, there is an entry in the Exchange System Manager for the offline address list and it does have that del:7cb.... tag on it. I tried to right click and select Rebuild, but it comes back and says "There are no bindings, Facility: win32 ID no: c00706b6" Should i just delete it? and/or rebuild from scratch? what is it for? As it turns out, the same entry with the DEL tag exists in my live system, which is interesting - i guess the migration to a new system is a good way to get bad things out of the old one!

Hi, Can you delete the offline address list from the GUI? If yes do that and then create a new one. If no you need to delete it using adsiedit and then create a new one. Leif

I have deleted and created, and rebuilt and finally once again, deleted the entries, and so far not having an effect. am rebooting the exchange 2000 server to see if that has an effect

this is the current error, and my guess is it thinks it should still be a domain controller...i wonder how to clean this up using adsiedit? TIA.
