Exch 2007 EMC crash when opening mailbox account properties
Hi all,On my Exchange 2007 Standard Ed - Server 2003 64bit, I'm having issue with the Exchange Management Console. Everytime I open any recipient mailbox's account tab properties (Recipient Configuration - Mailbox - right click on any user - Properties - open Account tab), the MMC always crash. The error message is "MMC has detected an error in a snap-in and will unload it." Then, if I choose "Unload the snap-in and continue running" it come up with "Unhandled Exception in Managed Code Snap-in", and it gives FX:{76dd58f7-54ba-42e3-a2e0-dbf4b674539f}.Is there anyone can help me?Thanks.

It looks like either .Net or MMC has problem. If .net 2.0 SP1 is not installed then upgrade it to SP1 and check. Try to reconfigure mmc by deleting mmc.exe.config in system32 folder (first take backup of file).

Hi Amit,Thanks for replying. Yes, .Net 2.0 SP1 is installed. What should I do with it?I also read an artcile about mmc.exe.config file, but I can't find c:\windows\system32\mmc.exe.config on my system. Please assist me.Thanks.

I doubt if we can repair/reinstall .net 2.0 sp1 on production Exchange 2007 server so I would NOTsuggest that. Create a new Recipient Configuration MMC and try. How to Add an Exchange Recipient Configuration Node to Microsoft Management Console Is it only server which gives problem? Do you have any other Exchange 2007 server or management console installed on other server/workstation where you can try the same thing?

If you are getting a crash from the Exchange Management Console you may want to try to clear the views. How to clear the views:To clear the views, start-> run MMC, in the console window, click file->options, then go to the Disk Cleanup tab and click delete files.

Hi Amit,Thanks for replying. The solution is still not fixing the problem. It is a single exchange server, no server/workstation where I can try the same thing.Do you have any other idea? Thanks

Hi Amit,Nope, I didn't get any other errors in the event log after crashing the EMC.I also can't find any other unproper result in Exchange Management Shell. Get-Mailbox and Get-User working just fine.Any idea why? Thanks

Try re-installing MMC 3.0 or latest version.
April 21st, 2008 7:13pm

Hi Bala,I can't re-install MMC 3.0 since it said that the system has newer version of this update.I wonder whether we can uninstall and then install again. But, if un-installing it I'm afraid this might cause issue. What do you think? Thanks.

It should not causing any harm. If you afraid to do then don't do it. Please log a call with Microsoft PSS.

Just an update, I was getting same message in my lab environment (which is on VMWare) yesterday while opening EMC. I thought of re-installing MMC but it is included in Win2k3 SP2 so I was unable to do. I found some of the out of memory errors in event logs. I increased the physical & virtual memory for the server and it was resolved.

Also, try to disable the TCP Chimney, Enable RSS & Enable TCPA registry keys or install the hotfix KB948496, to disable SNP feature that installations with Windows 2003 SP2. I'm working on different issue with MS PSS Support came to know they are not giving any support if the Exchange & AD on VMWare servers. However, they given best effort support on Microsoft Virtual Servers. I don't remeber the KB articles that they referred at this time.

Hi Amit,Out of memory is a good point. I just checked my system from 4GB of physical memory I only have around 350MB available with 6GB PF usage yet virtual memory was set to 3.6GB.We are looking at upgrading the virtual memory on this weekend.Hopefully this might fix the issue. I'll let you know the outcome.Thanks.

Can you please runPerfmonand check following countersMemory\Pages/sec and also check Process\Working Set for Store.exe? Also, do you see any Event ID's like 2020 & 2019 in System Event Log?

Hi Bala,Thanks for the reply. Sorry, I can't give a valid production perfmon until next Monday at the moment. I will inform here as soon as I got it.In system event log there is no 2020 and 2019.Thanks

Hi all,I just install SP1 on my Exchange server and at the moment it actually fix my issue (hopefully forever). I will let the system running for a week and see whether SP1 really fix it. Definitely, I will inform the result here.Thank you for all your assistance.

Hi Bala,Today is the first production day I run the Exchange with SP1 and 10GB virtual memory. Ghe good news is the EMC didn't crash anymore. From perfmon the Memory\Pages/sec is 0 most of the time, but sometime between 10 seconds it hits 16. The Store.exe memory usage is 1.5GB at the moment. Is that normal? Thanks.

Hi, I had the same problem, in my case execute the Best Practices Analyzertool to verify the status of my server and i found the following problem: Offline Address Book definition is missing The 'msExchUseOAB' value for mailbox store 'Mailbox Database.edb' on server EXCHANGE is missing. This will cause offline address book errors for 2 users in this database. In the First Storage Group i have mountedtwo databases. The database of the initial installation (Mailbox Database.edb)and another database with mailboxes that were restored. For some reason the Offline Address Book on "Mailbox Database.edb" was not set, to resolve this problem follow the link that showed me the Best Practices Analyzer Tool. Offline address book is not associated with a particular mailbox store http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997667.aspx I have not seen the problem again.... Best Regards,

Hi Cesar,Running Best Practices Analyzer tools is a good method to find issue with Exchange. I forgot to run the tools so I didn't know whether we have the same root cause. But, during this issue, I also working on another issue which was the some user are not included in Offline Address Book. During the fix I ran the OAB update couple of time, but I didn't see any message as yours. I manage to solve the OAB issue without any error message but the EMC crash issue still exist.Do you reckon we have different root issue or it is the same? Thanks.
