Excel was able to open the file by repairing or removing the unreadable content

Please help.  I'm getting the following message when I'm trying to open a file in Excel 07:

Excel was able to open the file by repairing or removing the unreadable content.

Removed Records: Style from /xl/styles.xml part (Styles)

Repaired Records: Format from /xl/styles.xml part (Sytles)

Were these files creted with Excel 2010?

Poste more info.

Anyway, try to repair Excel 2007 user settings in the registry:

1) Press "Windows" + "R" keys

2) type REGEDIT and press Enter

3) go to HEYKEY_CURRENT_USER >> SOFTWARE >> MICROSOFT >> OFFICE >> 12.0

4) iside 12.0 riight click EXCEl and rename to EXCEL.OLd

5) close regedit and try with the file

Post the results here

The file was created with Excel 07 and it's shared by two users.  The users are using Excel 07.  Only one user was opening and editing the file when the above error occurred. All formats in the file have been removed since the error.  I'll try your suggestion to reset Excel.  I also want to know what has caused this issue because redoing the formats is time consuming.

Try to get previous versions of this file.

Maybe you'll be able to recover the file in the state prior to the problem.

As you know, just right click the file, go to Properties, and open the previous versions tab.

It's adiviceble to rename the file you have to avoid replacing it with one of the previous versions.

This is one way to get the formatting back, but it's not the solution to the problem.  I would like to know why the file became corrupted and all formatting were gone.  There are others also having this problem. Shawn

Another Excel 07 file just got the same error yesterday.  The following hotfix was applied to the computer prior the error:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/983314

So Microsoft doesn't have a solution???

Hi Will, sonicfish & moderator,

Sorry to continue on this old toppic but I can't find the answer to the problem.
I am dealing with the same problem here :(

Some of the Excel files open just fine and other excel files provide me with an error.
It was temporary resolved by creating a new profile for the user but this wasn't a permanent resolution.

It are multiple files who have this issue.
Could you please provide me with the answer.

The users who have this issue are running Excel 2007 and have the latest SP installed with all the updates etc.

Do you know of a way of how to resolve this?
