Excel files creating .tmp files on network mapped drive

I have a chronically problem with Excel 2007 and the creation of .tmp files. I am posting this on the Office support forum, but I am not entirely convinced this is an Office problem. The workstations having this issue are running Windows 7 and have Office 2007. This is a company environment so the files are stored on a server that is running Server 2003. Machines that are running Office 2007 SP3 and When a user with Excel 2007 opens a .xlsx file from a network drive and saves it a .TMP file is created. If I save a file called test.xlsx it creates a file called test.xlsx~RF35148a.TMP. When Excel is closed, the file does not disappear so it is filling up some folders with these .TMP files. I also noticed that this does not happen with Word or PowerPoint files. I logged onto the machine as a user and as an admin to confirm it isn't a permissions issue. I looked into this issue online for a while and most solutions involved disabling or changing the settings of the anti-virus software on the machine. All of our machines are running Quickheal Endpoint Security. I disabled the anti-virus on both the server and the workstation and that did not solve the problem. I did some more testing and noticed that the problem doesn't happen if the .xlsx files are saved on the local machine.

Hi Pramod,

Based on your description, Excel file created a temp file in network and after closing it the temp file didn't delete automatically.

As we know, Office programs will create a temp file when opening, to lock the file from editing by other users. So we need Delete permission to users in network for deleting files after colsing. And you had checked the permissions and antivirus in both local computer and network.

Now depending on your situation, I will provide several methods to help you:

1. Try to create .xls file and check if it works fine in network.

2. Try to delete the temp file manually and check if you will get any error messages, if possible please post the error messages here.

3. Try to reset the .xlb file in your computer. Go to C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel, rename Excel12.xlb to Excel12.xlb.old. Then restart Excel and check if it works fine for you.

Please try these methods and provide more information about your issue.

I'm glad to help and follow up your reply.
