Excel crashing because of clr.dll

Hello all,

I have a user with Excel crashing regularly with the following event log entry -

Faulting application name: EXCEL.EXE, version: 14.0.7145.5001, time stamp: 0x54e3daa4

Faulting module name: clr.dll, version: 4.0.30319.18444, time stamp: 0x52717e84

Exception code: 0xc0000005

Fault offset: 0x0002446e

Faulting process id: 0x2038

Faulting application start time: 0x01d07d209c56f725

Faulting application path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\EXCEL.EXE

Faulting module path: C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\clr.dll

Report Id: 4e510a8b-e915-11e4-a7bd-78e3b5cb281e

The crash points to https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2640103 as the fix. however, the update fails to install saying that I have a newer product installed or similar. I do have .Net framework 4.5 installed on that machine and the hotfix is for .net version 4.0.

Why is Excel picking up the 4.0 version? Do you have any other ideas to resolve the crashing issue?

thanks and regards,

-Ravi

Re:  net framework and where angels fear to tread

I needed a particular version of the Net Framework programs a while back.
I  ended up having to uninstall all versions on my machine and then reinstall them in the required order.
There is a repair tool for Net Framework and also a cleanup tool if the standard windows uninstall fails.

My knowledge of the subject is pretty will limited to the above.
I recommend you review the "Users Guide" for Net Framework at...

and pay attention to the "very important caveats".
