Excel Shared file - multiple users R&W violation

Hello,

I will start with the network configuration ( The below devices are members of an AD):

LAN - AD - SCCM

Windows 2003R2 as file and print server

MS Win 7 with MS Office 2010 on the workstations.

2 GPO's: one Read only and one Read&Write ( in this case both users have R&W NTFS permissions )

Issue:

We have a shared xlsm file ( 15 Mb with macros ) on the shared folder that is used by multple users.

( The excel spreadsheet has the ( Review ) Share Workbook option unticked.)

The user ( RED user in the screenshot ) opens the  excel spreadsheet from the FAP and he doesn't receive a message advising that the file is in use by someone else.

At this point he should have Read & Write permissions and the other users that open the file should have only Read access.

When he tried to save the file he couldn't as the file was Read Only.

Eighter at the opening time there was another user that had the file opened and he didn't receive the notification.

Eighter they both opened the file at the same time.

What the issue could be ?

This is the only file affected.

bugs in Microsoft office application

different versions of Microsoft Office that are not properly updated;  ( 2010 standard / pro )

some Windows 7 operating system that is not properly updated;

the Windows Server is missing an update;

the macro in background of the file;

small network connection glitches;

the size of the file;

Hi CodrinH,

Based on your description, my understaning was that user 1 opened a shared file, but when the user 2 opened the shared file he didn't get any messages about the file has been opened by other users. This caused user 1 can't save the file as he's permission change to Read-Only.

Normally if you open a spreadsheet that another user already has open, there is a message advising that the spreadsheet is in use and providing options for viewing the spreadsheet. If you select the "Notify" option, once the other user has closed the spreadsheet, you will get a message giving the option to leave Read Only mode.As of Excel 2010, a "Share Workbook" feature is available.

And you said >>This is the only file affected.<<, so I suppose this issue might be caused by the settings of this Excel file. You can check it by yourself, and please refer to this article:

Hope it's helpful.
