our secretary is creating PowerPoint presentations with graph linked from Excel. this Excel sheet have links from other PC in finance. he have 6GB RAM. upon checking, his free memory is just below 500MB and his PC suffering from slow response. however, from other computers, this combination of Excel and PowerPoint is not slow although the other computers have 8GB RAM.

my immediate response will be to bump the RAM to 8GB but pending that, is there anything i could do to make the response faster?

Hi Reno Mardo,

In regarding of this issue, I have a couple of questions.

  • What are the file format of Excel and PowerPoint files? XLS/PPT or XLSX/PPTX.
  • How many RAM did the Office suits occupy when he running the PowerPoint presentations?
  • How did you link the Excel data source file? Local Area Network or other

Then, I have some suggestions, you might try them.

1) If you are using 32bit Office 2013 in the particular PC that has 6GB RAM. Please try to use 64 bit Office, because the  the max RAM usage of the Excel 2010 32bit version is 2 GB. Even if we add more physical memory, 32bit version wont be able to use it.

2) Disable auto calculation option.

Many calculation options (Automatic, Automatic except for data tables, Manual, Recalculate workbook before saving) and the iteration settings (Enable iterative calculation, Maximum Iterations, Maximum Change) operate at the application level instead of at the workbook level (they are the same for all open workbooks).

To find advanced calculation options, click the File tab, and click Options. In the Excel Options dialog box, click Advanced. Under the Formulas section set calculation options

Hi,

The GM didn't provide me enough time to collect all those information so what I did is provide a temporary laptop and that "fixed" the problem.

The PC that was originally used is a Dell OptiPlex 7010 with 6GB RAM, 500GB hd (400GB free space) while the temporary laptop provided is a Toshiba Z40-A1113 with 8GB RAM. Actually the PC's RAM was even increased to 10GB but that didn't help.

I tend to blame the video RAM but both have shared memory. Only difference is the laptop uses a 4th Gen Intel CPU and the PC uses a 3rd Gen.

When I get the time, I'll do the steps as suggested by you.

Thanks.
