Excel 32bit on Windows 7 64bit - Add in problem

Problem:

-Excel document as a hard link to a particular location of add in file C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\XLSTART

-Calculations calling the function in the addin produce an error #Name unknown text (basically cannot find the file)

What's been tried:

-Creating the XLSTART location and adding xla file there

-creating an mklink from C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\XLSTART to  C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\XLSTART

-adding C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\ to path

What does work:

Updating the document link to point to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\XLSTART

Unfortunately not an option due to not all machines running 64bit yet

If you got #Name error, you need to refer to this link:

https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Correct-a-NAME-error-7b73ddd3-2f9f-4701-9a34-199550e0cd70

The reason is variety:

The EUROCONVERT function is used in a formula, but the Euro Currency Tools add-in is not loaded.

  • A formula refers to a name that does not exist.

  • A formula refers to a name that is not spelled correctly.

  • The name of a function that is used in a formula is not spelled correctly.

  • Text may have been entered in a formula without enclosing it in double quotation marks.

  • A colon (:) was omitted in a range reference.

  • A reference to another sheet is not enclosed in single quotation marks (').

  • A workbook calls a user-defined function (UDF) that is not available on your computer.

  • You can try this link's method.

At home I have a 64-bit PC and a couple of 32-bit ones.  I have addressed this issue by adding an environment variable on my 32-bit machines (Control Panel > System > Advanced System Settings > Environment Variables > System Variables)

Environment Variable: "ProgramFiles(x86)" with a value of "C:\Program Files"

Then declare the hard link as "%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Microsoft Office\..."

It's a bit obscure.  But should work on both 64-bit machines (where the (x86) environment variable is defined "automatically" for you, and on 32-bit machines (where you simply point the links to the Program Files folder.)

Hope that helps.
