Excel 2013 power view goes blank after the December udate
Hi,
After the December Office 2013 updated (i uninstall and install Office again and before i run the updates everything works) power view starts giving problems; I have a map in one
of the files and when I put the mouse in one country the screen goes white and never work again. If I try to press the Power View button in Excel it give me and
HRESULT E_FAIL error. Any idea?
Thanks,
Rui Reis

Hi,
Did you get the whole error message " PowerView
Error: Error
HRESULT E_Fail has been returned from a call to a COM component"? If it is, please try this method and check if it is helpful:
Renaming the MSForms.exd in the following locations solved the problem.
- C:\Users\[user name]\AppData\Local\Temp\Word8.0
- C:\Users\[user name]\AppData\Local\Temp\Excel8.0
New MSForms.exd files were automatically created when restarting the applications.
If this issue still exists, please try remove the Office Dec.9 update patches to test. If it works well, please be patient while we fix the problems over the next little while.
Microsoft support team aware of this issue and have drafted a KB to address this issue. The team is working with the FixIt team to get the automated solution implemented into the KB.

Hi,
Thanks for the answer. Unfortunately renaming the file didnt solve the problem, but if I remove December 9 update it works. I will wait for the fix to this issue.
Thanks,

Hello George,
Could you let us know when the KB will be expected? My users are waiting for this solutions since they cannot use their Power View reports (interactive part) anymore!
Thanks in advance!

Hi Robinson,
Unfortunately this doesn't fix the problem. Tried both options (deleting the "MSForms.exd" files in the temp directory and an Repair of the Office installation). After restarting my laptop the problem still persists). The third option (installing
KB2726958) was already installed on my system.
Can you reproduce the problem? My system has Excel 2013 (Office Professional plus) with SP1 installed and all latests updates. Problem occurs when you click on a bar in the bar chart for example (in Power View!), the screen goes blank after this. My colleagues
have the same problem since the updates from last week.

Hi,
We are currently investigating the issue. Could you check your Region setting for your system and see if it is set to a region that uses a comma for the decimal mark? If it is, please change it
to a region that uses a period for the decimal mark instead of a comma, and then let me know if that helps or not.
Thanks,
Amanda

Hi Amanda,
The region setting of my system (Dutch) was set to a comma for the decimal mark. After changing this to a period (and restarting Excel, first time you get another error) the problem is solved.
The region setting (a comma sign for the decimal mark) is the default Dutch standard which I would like to keep, can you give us an option/uppdate so that my region settings are unchanged with this new info?
Thank you!

Hi Amanda,
My region setting is
Portuguese and changing the comma to period solve the problem. However its important for us to use the comma. Do you know when it was expected a fix for this?

Hi Amanda,
changing the character for the decimal mark from
comma to point
solves the issue, hopefully this can be fixed soon.
For now, Happy New Year
Cheers Tom

Hi Amanda,
I have the same problem as many customers of mine..As you understand it is not a good solution to change the regional settings as in Greece ( & Europe ) we use comma for decimal mark and will be pretty confusing..
Any news regarding a fix?
Thanks, I wish Happy New Year to all..

Does anyone know exactly which
patch is responsible for the error?

Hi Amanda,
I'm facing a similar issue. My Power View sheet goes blank after some seconds when I try to change its filters.
Changing the region from Portuguese (which uses comma for decimal mark) to English (US) seems to mitigate the issue. Thanks for the tip.
But I'm waiting for a Fix. Do you have some news?
Thanks again.

Same error here using Spanish regional settings. Changing the comma worked, but again, it is not a valid workaround in most cases.

Hello Amanda and others,
I had a though situation with a customer, due to this bug. I created a power pivot model and several power view reports, and I handed the workbook back to my customer, it just showed a blank window in all power video tabs. Quite frustrating!
Could you give me an estimate when this is going to be fixed?

Hi,
Same problem with my workbooks (swedish), we appreciate a fix as soon as possible.
Thanks,
Ruth

Hi
Changing the system regional setting from (in my case) Dutch to English United states solves the problem. Thanks for that!
Is there any news about the fix?

MASSIVE ISSUE MICROSOFT - Please provide a FIX asap - we cannot work with decimal marks.

Got this message from an employee of Microsoft:
this issue was introduced with the December update
If you have a MSI installation of OFFICE 2013 you can avoid the issue by uninstalling the following updates.
KB2899498
KB2899505
KB2920734
If you have a ClickToRun installation you can use the 'officec2rclient.exe'.
Call for a 64bit OFFICE installation
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\ClientX64\officec2rclient.exe" /update user updatepromptuser=False forceappshutdown=True displaylevel=False updatetoversion=15.0.4667.1002
Call for a 32bit OFFICE installation
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\ClientX86\officec2rclient.exe" /update user updatepromptuser=False forceappshutdown=True displaylevel=False updatetoversion=15.0.4667.1002
As it states this will also uninstall some security updates.
It will be fixed with the February update.

Have the same problem here, with Danish language. But even changing it to english setup, it doesn't help unfortunately.
I noted that this issue is clearly an issue when work with graphs. Tabels seems to not trigger the blank screen
February 3rd, 2015 6:22pm
I have the same issue with the blank screens, and so does my colleagues, both with 32bit and 64.
Any ETA when in February its supposed to come a fix?
This is really slowing us down in our business, bigtime! And changing regional settings in Europe is really not an option.

Hi,
I use a Portuguese (Brazil) version of excel 2013 64bit and that instalation didnt work for me. After I open and agree, it shows me a message saying "There are no products affected by this package installed on this system" (literal translation
of portuguese message).
I have power view, powerpivot, power query, power map... i have installed all automatic updates, yes i chosed the 64bit version to download and pt-BR language at the site.. It's important for me too to keep using comma instead of period on numbers, so changing
on excel properties wont work for me.
could someone help me? i'll probably have to do the same on all clients that i have already used this tool.

Hi,
The same for me in for office 2013 in 32bit, french. It's becoming a big problem as we can't deploy this tool to our users.

Hi
How long does it take to fix this issue? It's not a viable option that our users have to change their regional settings to US, just to be able to work with Excel 2013 Power View.
