Excel 2013 not responding when doing refresh all for enbedded quires.

System:

Windows 8.1

Intel I7 620 CPU

12 GB ram

Office 2013

Issue 1:

I have a excel file with 29 data from WEB quires. These are quires for stock data and the only difference in them is the ticker symbol. When I request a refresh all Excel goes into a not-responding mode and I have to quit the program to stop it. This same file ran OK in Excel 2010. I have the data on sheet one and about half the quires on sheet 2 and the remaining quires on sheet 3. Each quire downloads data a small table and cells in sheet one reference cells in sheet two and three. Two cells are accessed from each table. I had a Microsoft support person on the line today and she had me repair office, which didn't help. I removed Sheet 2 and Sheet 3 and redid all the quires and that didn't help. Each quire can be refreshed individually.

I also have a laptop with Office 2013 and Excel has the same problem with the same file.

Issue 2:

Each row holds information about a given stock and gets current stock price and dividend percent from its quire table. The stock price comes from column A and the dividend percent come from column C two rows below the row the price is in. Every time a do a refresh the cell that references the data in Column C comes from two rows below the row it should come from. This does not happen for every stock only some of them. The reference to the data from the A column is always correct. This problem was happening in Excel 2010 too.

Hi,

To your first issue:

Excel 2013 not responding may be caused by some reasons. Let's do some tests to narrow down the issue:

Method 1: Verify/install the latest updates

Method 2: Start Excel in safe mode

Method 3: Investigate possible issues with add-ins

Method 4: Check whether your antivirus software is up to date or is conflicting with Excel

https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2758592/en-gb

If the issue still exists, please upload the event log in the thread, I'll do more deeply research.

To your second issue, would you like to upload a sample of the Excel file by using SkyDrive? I want to test in my PC.

George,

I've done all the things you suggested and I did an Inspect Workbook today and removed all unused connections and still have the problem. I tried the file on another machine (my laptop) and I have the same problem. I removed the sheets with the quires and rebuilt them and that didn't resolve the problem. It seems that once I add the third quire it fails.

The event log refers me to the Action Center, but I don't have any information there. I have the event log filtered to only hold errors, but I don't see how to attach it to this message. I can load it and the Excel file to my SkyDrive if that would help. You need to tell me how to share it with you.

Hi George,

I am having the same issue with the refresh external web query data. I am running Excel 2013, and when I try to refresh all Excel freezes up and then I have to end task. However, when I refresh the each connection individually, I have no problems.

I am running 20 connections.

Thought Microsoft should know as well.

George,

My SkyDrive wants an email address for you to send you a link to the files. I think I followed the instructions, but I don't see how to let you view them without your email address.

Thank you for the update, I was wondering if I setup the SkyDrive link correctly I'm glad to know you've got the files.

George,
I was wondering how you are doing with my Excel problem. Have you gotten anywhere, and are you able to duplicate the problem. Are you in a position to refer it to Microsoft or have you done that already?
Thanks in advance for an update.

JClarke,

Have you gotten anywhere on resolving your issue? I haven't heard anything from George in quite some time. I tried to report the problem to Microsoft, but they wanted $250 dollars to look into the problem, said I would get it back if it was their problem and not mine. I'm a member of a PC users group and we have a group license that doesn't seem to come with any assistance.

If you'd like you can email me direct at jimlinux@q.com.

Thanks - Jim

Hi,

I'm also having the same problem - is there a solution or patch to fix this issue?

tks

Stuart.

April 4th, 2014 1:36pm

Stuart,

It looks like you are the third person to report this problem here, I have not found a fix for this problem other than running the quires manually one at a time. I recently reinstalled Excel 2010 and it works in that version.

As I said above I don't have an individually purchased version of Office 2013 so Microsoft won't talk to me unless I give them a credit card so they can charge me $250.

I don't know what has happened to George or if he reported it to Microsoft. I haven't heard anything from JClarke either. If you have an individually purchased version then you might be able to report the problem and point them to this discussion. Do keep us informed as to your process/progress.

Thanks Jim

This problem has been referred to the Excel 2013 development team and they are working on it. They have been able to reproduce the problem in their lab using my spreadsheet. Currently there is no estimate on when it will be fixed, but I've been told I'll be notified when it is done.

I'll post to this site when I hear that that has happened.

Just thought I'd update anyone that's interested on the status of this issue. I haven't heard anything for some time now and all emails that I've sent asking for the promised weekly updates have gone unanswered. In fact I got a rather nasty email from the Indian company that is working on the problem saying I shouldn't be dissing the engineer I talked to. I guess that came in response to an email I sent to a Microsoft person who said he would be overseeing the issue. He asked me if I was being kept updated on the status and I told him I had been promised weekly reports and I hadn't heard from anyone in eleven days.

I have had a similar problem of Excel 2013 crashing during manual refreshes of certain pivot tables linked to a table in the same workbook. What fixed this for me, was removing the Team Foundation Add-In (COM). Run Excel as administrator and go to File>Options>Add-Ins; Then at the bottom select Manage COM Add-Ins. Remove the Team Foundation Add-In. Hope this is helpful.

I have exactly the same problem at work as Issue 1 for stock market quotes, with Windows 8.1 and Office Professional Excel 2013. I can refresh one quote at a time, but refresh all causes Excel to stop responding.

The file does the same thing on my home computer with Windows 8.1 and Office Family edition Excel 2013. It worked before on with Excel 2007 and Windows XP.

If you get hold of Microsoft, I wish you all the luck in the world. They have decided to stonewall me and I've not been able to get anything out of them for months now. They were able to duplicate the problem and agreed it is there, but after promising me weekly updates on their progress to fix the problem I haven't got any reply to my inquires. You can probable report the issue to them if you have a purchased copy of Office, it took me quite a bit of time to get them to talk to me because my copy was acquired through my user group and we don't have a maintenance contract with them.
I tried to get a news agency interested in looking into the problem to put some pressure on them, but I couldn't find anyone that wanted to get involved. Having Excel 3013 messed up and not working properly, isn't news worthy in the tech news world.

Hey guys I think I found a fix to this issue.  It worked for me and I hope it does for all of you.

1. Open Excel Workbook

2. Go to Data > Connections.

3. Select a Connection then  select > Properties.

4. Uncheck Enable Background Refresh.  (I am unsure as to whether the other two refresh options matter).

5. Repeat for all external connections.

6. Save Workbook

7. Go to Data > Refresh dropdown menu > Refresh All.

8.  If this does not work the refer to Step 4 and 5 unchecking the remaining refresh options and try step 6 and 7 again.

I am curious to whether this helps anyone else.  So please respond after you try this out!

This morning I, too, got "sqlstate 42000 error 18456 login failed" on several machines using (File, Help) Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010 v14.0.7143.5000 (32-bits) on (Command+Break) Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 and Windows 8.1 Enterprise connecting to (SELECT @@VERSION):

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 (SP2) - 10.50.4000.0 (X64)

Enterprise Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 6.1 <X64> (Build 7601: Service Pack 1)

, but all the "Enable background refresh" boxes were unchecked.

After using a 3rd party SQL client to verify the login was correct, I simply kept trying to refresh the data connections and waiting and the problem resolved itself.

I am having the exact same issue on 2013, but no problem on 2010.

I have found that if I deselect "enable background refresh" the issue seems to be fixed, this is the case for me but for some of my other users they still have the crash problem.
