Excel 2013 Error - Microsoft Excel has stopped working.
Just downloaded and installed Office 2013 to my new Windows 8 machine. Every time I try to use one of the Office products I receive the following message:
Microsoft has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.
Please advise. Thanks.

Hi,
In the situation, we may determine if the Excel can work in safe mode. Following the steps below:
Press Win+R, in the dialog box type:
Excel.exe /safe
Click Ok to run.
If it can work, disable all of the Excel add-ins and then start Excel again.
Best regards,

I just downloaded the Office 365 Home suite and started with Outlook and what you describe above happened. I followed the suggestion below and turned off all the Add-Ins and it then worked fine.
Then tried Excel, and it also would do nothing beyond crash immediately. No Add-Ins were turned-on, and so it still will not open.
Tried Word, same thing happened, there were Add-Ins on and turned them off... and, voila, works fine.
So, the weird one is that Excel has none turned on, so there is nothing to turn off. I did the Repair suggestion and ... nuthin'.
I'll try the "Online Repair". Somethin's gotta give. This much work to get these programs working is really stupid.

I was having this issue with Excel 2013 on my windows 8 pc. When I used the safe mode workaround, it would open but when I looked at the add-ons all of them were already disabled.
I uninstalled this piece of software that was bundled in with my Epson scanner :
ABBYY-FineReader
Problem solved!
Hope this helps you!

Had the same problem (very frustrating!) and the solution is to remove the ABBY FineReader which originally came with the Epson scanner/printer suite (go to Control Panel --> Install/Uninstall Programs --> and uninstall it). After that all programs
that didn't run before (Excel, Word Outlook for me) now run OK.

I am having the same problem with my windows 8 even in the desktop mode. It ran all of the office products in the beginning, now it won't run them. Says the same thing as above. Tried the excel.exe/safe it didn't work. :(
March 13th, 2013 7:13am
I got the same problem. Every time I run Word/Excel/Powerpoint I got "... has stopped working" message, but I never experience it until yesterday.
I had a presentation in my class and connected my laptop running Windows 8 with my school's digital projector. It was plug and play and I didn't see it install any driver or software, or so I thought. Then tonight I couldn't open any Office applications.
"/safe" mode worked fine, temporarily. But I got the message again every time I try to run Office applications normally. I looked into the Add-ins section in Option menu, there's no external add-ins. The only add-ins are microsoft excel's native and they
can't be disabled.
This is very frustrating, please help me fix this issue.
Thanks,

I had a similar problem,
I right clicked the excel shortcut in the start menu and selected 'run as administrator' amd it worked for me. In my case at lease it appears to heve been some kind of permissions issue.
Good luck!

Thank you so much for the answer to my Office 2013 problem. I've been fuming over this for a couple of weeks. I knew it had something to do with my new Epson printer but did not know what or how to fix. Finally--the answer and solution to my problem.
Happy again!

Hello, I'm having the same issue as well and it's unbelievable that once again, MSFT makes things that don't get along. I just loaded Office 2013 onto my newly installed Windows 8 box. At first, all was fine. A couple of days later I get
this error for all of my Office products.
I went as far as reinstalling the OS all over again and got the same result. First it works and now it doesn't. I had to use Google Docs just to create a spreadsheet last night. I don't have an Epson printer installed so I don't have the
ABBY software to uninstall. I tried Running as Administrator and it still crashes. I have no Add-ins to disable because it's a clean install. The sad thing here is, that once again to fix a MSFT product you have to tweak it to work.
Don't know if the problem is Windows 8 or Office but Office 2013 worked perfectly when I was running Windows 7.
I guess I have to bite the bullet and either go back to Windows 7.

Dear all,
I share the frustration of previous users. My operating system is Vista, but the bug is present even here. I do not have any addin or Epson printer installed. Everythins is working in Office 2010 excepting Excel, which crashes on exiting.
After this site, I have searched several other sites, and I have found this site, which shows a solution, which I have tested (without understanding what it means to change that register key) and it works, so I am happy and I will share with you.
------------------------------
Found the problem: it is also related to the Addins from bluetooth.
Open the Registry (run Regedit)==>
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Excel\Addins\BtOfficeAddin.BtOfficeIntegration.1
and change the LoadBehavior key from 3 to 0
Restart excel 2010...and IT WORKS !

works great!

Thank you very much for the useful hint. I had the same problem with the Office trial version (only Powerpoint could start, but Excel and Word crashed) and I thought first the trial version had some bugs. Then I bought and installed Office 2013 Home and
Student and the same problem occurred. I tried the safe mode and it indeed started but no add-ins were checked. Finally, I followed your tip and uninstalled ABBYY-FineReader which came with my Epson multifunction printer/scanner and... it worked. It's a pitty
though, since ABBYY-FineReader is a good program.

Hope my experience helps anyone searching for answers to Excel /Word /Office freezing issues.
I have just fixed frozen Excel & Word applications in Office 2010. This happened
some 6 years ago and as my memory gets a bit more rusty every year, it took me sometime
to remember. First instance was with MS XP and Office 2000 - yes, old like me.
Both instances were with my wife's machine, so you can understand the
situation. I spent into the early hours search forums like this and trying all
sorts of fixes that are listed. In the end, the fix that fixed the problem was
to renew the user profile. That is, register anew user, then transfer all of
the files from the corrupted user profile to the new profile. Not an easy job,
but doable for most of us who are technologically challenged.
If anyone wants to try this, then just remember that there three types of files
that are not copied over. The following site gives the process.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-NZ/windows-vista/fix-a-corrupted-user-profile
Remember that Favorites, email messages and contacts also need to be copied over.
This fix may not necessarily be the solution for everyone's issues with Office applications
freezing, but it fixed mine.
I'm now a hero again in my household :)
P.S. I am still using Office 2000 and it's a great suite of programs. Should still be working after I'm long gone.

Great advice from phlaviusmaximus (see posting below) to uninstall
ABBYY-Finereader
I have a new Dell 7737 with Windows 8.1 and Office 2013. Powerpoint worked but both Word and Excel fell over immediately with "Microsoft (Word/Excel) has stopped working".
I un-installed Espon ABBYY-Finereader 9.0 Sprint v 9.01.513.58212 and magically Word and Excel are fine (not even a restart).
I think the ABBYY-Finereader was installed from CD which came with my Epson SX425W printer.

Thanks for posting about the ABBY fine reader. I started having problems with my work & excel. Thought I had to purchase a new copy because I was now running Windows 8 on my new lap top. Read this post after receiving the error message.
Removed the ABBY fine reader and everything is now working perfectly!! THANK YOU!!!
May 8th, 2014 4:47pm
I had this problem from yesterday noon after the installation of Japanese printer. My computer is Lenovo Yoga, and Windows 8.1 & Office 2013. I tried many ways to fix it such as excel /safe, disable add-on and reinstall Office. I spent many hours but
all failed.
After reading this tip I suddenly understood that the root cause may be the printer driver. But my computer can not find ABBYY-FineReader. Anyway I removed printer driver this morning and Excel works!
So the problem has be solved.

Yep. Uninstalled the Abbey software that came w/ my portable scanner and Excel ran perfectly.
I gave feedback about the Abbey software and the problem it's causing w/ Excel. I agree, the program is great, just messing up other things I need to use.
July 28th, 2014 9:37pm
ABBYY-FineReader seems to ultimately be the issue with this. For some reason the two programs cannot coexist peacefully. If you have that program
on your computer, uninstall it to resolve the issue.
