Excel 2013 CRASHES When using Excel 2010 files with pivot tables
I've got files that I've been using for years in Excel 2010 with pivot tables in them. Company recently pushed the 2013 upgrade and I've spent the lasts 3 weeks fighting crashing files. ZERO PRODUCTIVITY. Created "new" 2013 fresh files, pasted in my raw data, created pivot table and halfway thru BOOM.  MS Excel crashes again!  I've spent hours with our help desk, machine is good.  I have 30g of RAM.  All was well in Excel 2010 this is a 2013 problem.  I need help.  I am at work stop.

Hi Spanky,

Based on your description, could you tell me which version of Excel are you using, 32-bit or 64-bit?

First please open the Excel file in safe mode, if it works fine try to disable add-ins in Word.

If your file is large or contains a large amount of features, it is possible you are running low on available memory resources, the 64-bit version of Office may perform better for you. 32-bit office you run are limited to making use of only 2GB of RAM.

If the issue still exists, please try to collect the event log messages and send the event log messages to our email address:
ibsofc@microsoft.com
Please Note: Please add the URL of the case in the email subject or body.

Maybe I can get more information from event log messages, I'm glad to help and follow up your reply.

Thanks for your reply Emi.  My install is 32-bit.  Tried opening files in safe mode and the result is the same.  I spent part of yesterday re-creating one of my files in 2013. I pasted in the data and rebuilt the pivot tables and it works fine.  If I close that file and open any one of my previous files that have always worked flawlessly and Excel locks up and crashes.  MS has an Excel compatibility problem.  I've heard numerous complaints company wide.  Our help desk told me yesterday I could un-install Office 2013 (even though it was a forced push from corp IT) and reinstall 2010 from our internal s/w store.  This was not permitted a week ago.  For corp to reverse itself indicates there are widespread issues.

I'd like to "fix" Excel 2013 if it is a matter of settings or features rather than spend the time doing an uninstall and reinstall, but at this point it may be the most productive course of action.  Thank you for your help.

Hi Spanky,

>>I'd like to "fix" Excel 2013 if it is a matter of settings or features <<, I suggest you try this method:

Please try to rename the XLB file in your computer. XLB is a setting file format created by Microsoft Excel. XLB files contain custom settings for the toolbars (or command bars). These settings can be edited or customized by selecting toolbar from the view options.

Please go to C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel, and rename Excel14.xlb to Excel14.xlb.old, restart Excel and check if it works fine for you.

I don't have Excel14.xlb file.  I have Excel15.xlb, so I am changing that and will see if it works.

Thanks,

Hi Emi,

Unfortunately that didn't fix the problem.  I opened files created in XL 2010 and still had long delays (20-30 seconds) simply performing ctrl-shift-arrow down to count a column or dragging a formula down.  After a few simple actions it became unresponsive and the "(Excel is Not Responding)" error msg appeared at the top of the program frame.  So after closing files create in XL-2010 I opened the new file I create in XL-2013 (a duplicate of 2010 file) and it performed perfectly.

Any other ideas?

Thanks again,

John Miller

Hi Spanky,

If this issue still exists, please try to collect event log message when Excel crash.

Steps of collecting event log:

Open Event Viewer to check whether there's any error about the Excel/Word crash issue.

Press Win + R, type "eventvwr" in the blank box, press Enter. In the Event Viewer, browse to Windows Logs -> Application, there may be some errors after the crash.

Please try to collect this event log and post the whole event log message here. I can get more information about your issue from this message and help you solve it.

After collecting event log, please send it to our email address:
ibsofc@microsoft.com
Please Note: Please add the URL of the case in the email subject or body.

No joy.  Sorry for the delay in responding.  I had to get some work done.  I un-installed MS Excel 2013 and re-installed 2010 and everything works fine.  I draw 2 conclusions from this result:  1)files are not corrupt and 2)MS has either a file compatibility issue or a settings issue in Excel 2013.

Going back to Excel 2010 however, was only temporary fix.  Corp IT will re-push (force) 2013 either this week or next.  I will try to collect event log message when Excel crashes again after upgrade.  Here is what I have found in the history.
