Excel 2010 crashes/hangs when saving or opening - running Window 7

Hi,

I've been trying to figure this out for several months.  When I use Excel, I will get an error when I try to cut/paste or save a document. When I get this error, excel hangs and tries to save the document but is never successful. It's almost as if it puts a little flag in the document itself because I can usually never open the doc since the computer sees it as corrupt now.  I've tried rebooting, restarting and looking under Options--> Add-Ins-->COM Add-ins and disabling anything there.

I thought it was a problem with my spreadsheet; but I was able to open it, make updates, and save the file on my kids computer last night.

Here is something from Event Viewer.  If I knew which folders specifically to look in for Windows events, I would have included those too.   Please help!  This drives me crazy and a small Excel task turns into such a time hog when these errors start happening.  I've learned to save after every entry as to not lose data...but this stinks!

Hi Lynn,

Based on your description, when you worked with the Excel file, l it often crashed. And you tried to open in your kids computer, it works fine. Could you tell me if this issue only appeared in a particular Excel file or random files? I can get less useful information from your Event log.

If this issue appeared in a particular file, try to repair it. Please refer to this article about how to repair an excel file.

https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Repair-a-corrupted-workbook-153a45f4-6cab-44b1-93ca-801ddcd4ea53

In addition, try to clean up temp files in the users computer. Most issues that involve excessive or corrupt temp files can be resolved by deleting the contents of a user's local temp folder. Here are the locations of temp folders in Windows:

C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Temp

C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files

C:\Windows\Temp

C:\Temp

Then check XLSTART folder, make sure if there is a hidden folder under XLSTART folder named Book1.

BTW, there are 2 XLSTART folders in your computer.

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\XLSTART

C:\Users\win7\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART

Then clean up the StartUp folder contain HIDDEN FILES. The path of START UP folder:

C:\Users\win7\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Please try these methods, and let me know if it works. If you could get error messages when it crashed, please post the whole error messages here. I am glad to help and forward to your reply.

Sadly, it's happened in multiple files.   When it originally happened, I did try to repair the file, but Excel just spins...it can't seem to recover from this without restarting Excel.  Even after restarting, it still often says Excel cannot open the document.  I've had to remake the Book 4 times since last July resulting in July, Aug, Sept in one book, Oct - Dec in another and so on.  They have all given me the corrupt file error.

I'm working on cleaning up the folders you listed.

Sadly, yes...the problem still exists.  I'm working with a new file today and Excel keeps hanging/crashing when I try to Save As. How can I help get you the info you might need to help me?

Hi Lynn,

After cleaning up temp files your issue still exists, I suggest you perform a clean boot in Windows.

It will start Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This helps eliminate software conflicts that occur when you install a program or an update or when you run a program in Windows. You may also troubleshoot or determine what conflict is causing the problem by performing a clean boot.

About how to perform a clean boot in Windows please refer to this article:

Hope its helpful.

Thanks, I will try this.  One question...I'm sure there are more Temp files now - should I remove them again?  I noticed removing the temp files seemed to help (for a while) for the file I was originally having trouble with.

No Luck.  I ran the msconfig.exe and opened the file that I was having trouble performing a Save As with...same thing happened, excel just hangs and spins endlessly.  I rebooted again.  Any other suggestions?

Going back in to repair and delete the temp files again.

What if there is no hidden Book1 folder in either of the XLSTART folders (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\XLSTART and C:\Users\win7\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART)??

Some of my path names are different than you listed above.  Is that a problem?

Hi Lynn,

Did you Excel file contain images? If yes, you might need to download a hotfix and enable it.

Download Hotfix:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2597142

And you can refer to this KB to get more information and how to enable the Hotfix:

Sorry for the late response, there were no images in the spreadsheet, a header and footer, yes; but no images or tables.

As soon as I linked two cells to another portion of the a different spreadsheet, Excel hung again.  I haven't had to work on this spreadsheet for the summer, but I'll be starting it again in Sept/October.
