Excel 2010 Not Responding on Save then deletes source file

I have seen this with 4 users in the last day.  They are working and saving occasionally. At some point when they save, Excel stops responding.  We force Excel to close, and the source Excel file is gone! We find there are two files that were created.  One with a .tmp file extension, the other has no file extension. For example, in one case the files were named 3F04D520 and 31545502.tmp.

We can recover the file by opening the .tmp file with Excel, then saving as Excel Workbook again. But the crashing continues. Need some help with this one.

We do see this event in Event Logs.

Hi RDMacAdam,

Based on your description, when your users tried to save the excel file, it crashed and even lost this file. Could you tell me where did you open and save the excel file? From local computer or network? If they open the same Excel file or random files?

This issue might be caused by several reasons, first I suggest you try to open file in safe mode and check if it works in safe mode.

Click File > Excel Options > Add-Ins on the left side of the dialog. Then click the drop-down arrow at the bottom of the dialog box and select "COM Add-Ins" from the list, then click the GO button. What comes up is a list of COM-Add Ins that are loaded and running.

If this issue still exists, please try to repair Office:

  1. Go to Control Panel.
    • In Windows 8, on the Start screen, type Control Panel, and select Control Panel in the search results.
    • In Windows 7 or Vista, click Start > Control Panel.
  2. Click Programs > Programs and Features.
  3. Click the Office application you want to repair, and then click Change.
  4. In Office 2010, click Repair > Continue.

Did these computers install any updates recently, you can try to uninstall these updates and check if your files work fine now.

And there is a not common reason caused excel crash you can also check it. This problem can occur if you have a bad printer installation.

Please refer to this article and try its method:

This is becoming more widespread for me, as I hear more of my users having this issue every day. To be clear, these are fully patched Windows 8.1 64bit computers.

I have tried the following:

  • Excel in Safe Mode - no change, behavior is the same
  • Repair Office 2010 (32bit) - no change
  • There are no COM add-ins enabled
  • Deleted all printers - no change

I am nearly certain this is related to a Windows Update, though I haven't pinpointed which one.

Hi RDMacAdam,

If you suppose this issue might be caused by Windows Update, I suggest you can try to uninstall these updates and check if it works for you.

First of all you need to know when did you start this issue and check the updates were installed recently.

Please refer to this link about when MS publish the updates:

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/bulletin/dn602597.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396

Please remove these KB one by one, if the issue is solved after removing one of these KB please let me know and provide which KB occur this issue. For fixing this issue is caused by Windows updates, you need to wait for MS to fix it.

Hope its helpful.

Hi,

We are also experiencing the "EXCEL.EXE
version 14.0.7151.5001 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed
" error on Windows 7 SP1 32bit, but the behaviour is a bit different. for the user.

Before this error is actually logged, our users experience that Excel GUI elements such as pop-ups, requestor windows and save dialogs gets hidden and "un-clickable"

At first we suspected some GDI problems, but soon found that closing Outlook allways seems to fix the issue.
(BTW: We use Outlook 2010 and MS CRM 2011 as well)

We are only in the early stages of error testing, but have tried things like "repair" on both Outlook, Excel and CRM, as well as the involved documents. We have not tried disabeling/uninstalling CRM as this is not an option (for now, not even for testing). :-/

I suspect it might be one of the May 2015 patches, but uninstalling patches on a users computer that long back, is very time consuming, so I wanted to check here first, if anyone has experienced similar or has any suggestions.

Thanks :)
