Our business has all just had Office 2010 installed. We are all finding that Excel randomly and intermittently will sometimes not display any of the charts in their own sheets. Furthermore, they can suddenly reformat into a portrait rather than landscape format. Some spreadsheets have had some charts showing while other charts are not showing.  They come and go at random each new time you open the spreadsheet. It makes using Excel impossible and we are considering going back to Office 2007 where we never experienced this issue as there seems no pattern, and therefore no way to define and fix the problem. This is affecting 80 users.

Excel 2010 automatically embeds new charts on the same worksheet as the source data, but you may find it easier to work with a chart if you move the chart to its own chart sheet in the workbook.

1. On the Chart Tools Design tab, click the Move Chart button to open the Move Chart dialog box.If you don’t see the Chart Tools Design tab, select the chart to make this tab appear.
2. Click the New Sheet option button in the Move Chart dialog box.This option places the chart on a new chart sheet that is added to the current workbook.
3. Entering a more descriptive name to replace "Chart1."This step is especially useful if you plan to have multiple chart sheets in the workbook.
4. Click OK to close the Move Chart dialog box.

Sally -- I have the same problem, but it occurs mainly when the charts are given their own tab -- then they are invisible to me. This has made my Excel 2010 largely useless to me, since my assistant sends me excel sheets with tabbed charts and I cannot see, copy or modify them. Help!

I have exactly the same problem - in some ways I'm pleased to see I'm not the only one! This is stopping me from opening other peoples spreadsheets & also from sensibly producing new charts of my own!

I'm running Excel 2007 on Vista. I believe I have the latest service packs / updates for all programs.

I have been using this combination of 2007 & Vista for 2-3 yrs now, suddenly since christmas it has started falling over. I have not re-installed this software, but there may have been a windows update since then.

I have been looking elsewhere for an answer & found it on another help site.

Apparently, it's linked to PRINT PREVIEW. If you open a spreadsheet, go to the chart that won't open, view "print preview", then close this down, magically it all goes back to normal !!!!!

Or at least it did for me!

I agree that this inability to display a graph is oinnected to print preview. I run Windows 7 Professional 64 bit with Office 2010 64 bit including Excel. Making graphs is mission critical to my work. This lack of visability of graphs has been a large waste of time. It is a new phenomenon, which I believe was caused by a recent update. My MIS Manager says that once I have a working system, I should avoid updates and delay purchasing new software.

I suspect the problem is the result of inappropriate coupling the printing and display functions. The formating can be made using the same software. However, the inability to print or preview printing should not disable the Excel display. It should also not interfere with the creation of PDFs. These systems should degrade gracefully.

I was having a similar problem.  I couldn't move charts from one spreadsheet to another, nor could I move the chart to it's own tab.  Worse yet, if I tried, the whole spreadsheet, data and chart, were simply deleted with no obvious way to recover if I hadn't saved beforehand.  However, when I shortened my file name, the problem went away.  This problem only appeared today, but I've only used such a long file name today.

Actually I just found a solution!

This issue apears when your printer is misconfigured or, as it was the case for me, a notwork printer not availible. In theses case office is not able to make a print prview of the chart. I know that's a bit odd but it Microsoft way ;)

I set my default printer to 'Microsoft XPS Document Printer' and now it work fine! :)

I have been having similar issues but have managed to find a fix. If you remove printers, re-install then and set default  orientation to landscape it changed my graphs to the correct size and format. This may work without the removal of printers but i didn't try that first, but it may be worth trying. It is very odd as i changed default orientation the chart was changing behind to the correct format and then the incorrect format. I am thinking this must be an issue with the printer driver.

Jason I found that the default printer was offline. This kept the charts in excel from displaying. Apparently it is connected to print preview. When I went to print preview the chart was absent, then I noticed my default printer was offline. When I made sure that my computer had a working online printer, the charts would display in print preview and also by just reopening the excel spreadsheet the charts were also dsiplayed.

Would you see that this is logged and resolved? It doesn't seem to be a robust solution to have the view capability for a chart object dependent on the print configuration. I experienced the same problem and am in the same boat with all present -- I need the ability to place charts in independent tabs in a spreadsheet to give my customers and bosses what they are asking for! Thank you for your concern.

Yes - this sorted my issue out - wish I'd checked this site earlier - just spent a frustrating 4 hours trying to sort it out to be able to pdf a client's report! But thank you - problem solved

If your default printer is missing, MS Office 2010 is unable to render the chart. As suggested go to Print preview and select a valid Printer if you don't have any then select Microsoft XPS Document Writer

Problem :

Chart is not getting diaplayed in the excel file. It was displaying well before..

Solution :

There are multiple printers installed on the computer. I changed the default printer to other one & now I can see the charts in the excel file
