Excel 2010 - Save as web page saving .jpg files as .emz files instead..

All,

I'm getting some odd behavior across the organization in all our Excel 2010 .xlsx or .xls files - when we do a save-as and select Save As type - Web Page (.html, .htm) previously if we had .jpg files they would be nicely exported to a file folder of the same name as the Excel document - but now when I do this - the embedded .jpg are all being saved as .emz files and are not usable - as when I click any of the .emz files I get an error .emz is not a valid win 32 application.

In Excel - the .jpg have been inserted using the Insert -> Object -> Create from File -> Browse method it appears as they are being displayed when I click one of the files as =EMBED("Packager Shell Object","")

Therefore - how can I best save the .xlxs so that the .jpg files that have been inserted are not converted to .emz files.

Hi kmoneill,

I test your issue in my own environment, and I get the result as the same as you. I also test your issue in other computers, the results are all the same.

A file with the .emz file extension is a Windows Compressed Enhanced Metafile file. This compressed file usually contains some type of graphic data. The .emz format is most commonly used in Microsoft applications like Word, PowerPoint and Visio.

We could open the *.emz file by Word, INSERT-Pictures. And I get the image as shown in the following figure.

If you need to save the image with Web Page type, you should insert a picture but not an object.

Hi kmoneill,

I do the further test about the question with Excel 2007, 2010 and 2013. If you insert picture (.jpg or .png formatting) as an object and you save the file as web page. You will find the picture is saved as .emz and .png (.gif in excel2007) file in the folder. And it only save the icon but not the image. As shown in the following figure.

But if you insert picture (.bmp formatting) as an object and you save the file as web page. You can find the .png file in folder is an image but not the icon. As shown in the following figure.

So I suppose this issue might be occurred by design behavior, and if you need to get the image after saving as web page. You can covert the pictures as .bmp files first and then insert them.

Hope its helpful.
