ExMon (April 22 release)
We are running Exchange 2007, CCR.Some users are getting the "Outlook is trying to retrieve data from the Exchange Server" popup on occasion. I noticed a new release of ExMon was released last week, so I downloaded and installed it on the Mailbox server. I set it up for 5 minute increments and observed the results for a bit. First thing that seems really odd is that a handful of users have a Max. Server Latency of 68719xx. For example, the user Joe Smith has a Max Server latency of 6871945 ms. There aretypically a number of these users with that exact value, which seems very odd. There users vary from cycle to cycle, so it isn't always the same folks. Most all other connected users have a max server latency of less than 100. Not sure if this is a reporting glitch or not...

Hello Martin,Issue Outlook is trying to retrieve data from the Exchange Server consist of lots of possibilities and we use tool like ExMON, PerfMon, ExTRA, Outlook ETL tracing, Netmon and so on so forth for troubleshooting the issue. Here are few things which you need to understand before you troubleshoot outlook retrieving data issue and the best thing i could suggest you to start with by an article published by Nino.*** Remember performance issue is something which you can't kill 100%, but yes you can identify the casuse and try to get rid of it by following the best practices for your organization ***'Requesting data from the Exchange server...' or 'Outlook is trying to retrieve data' client messages http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2005/05/25/405353.aspxDescription of the support process for issues that are related to the "Outlook is retrieving data" message in Outlook 2002 and Outlook 2003http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/892764Capturing user dumps using Performance alert http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2005/05/23/405294.aspxArun Kumar | MCSE - 2K3 + Messaging | ITIL-F V3

I agree with what Arun wrote. You can not kill the performance related issues 100% yet you can try above mentioned tools and identify the issue. As you have already run ExMon and do have a valid data in hands I would like to let you know the reason why RPC latencies may go so high in some user's case or randomly.1. Factors like network bottlenecks, slow network connectivity to server and a clogged network.2. Large mailbox stores and huge individual mailboxes may also increase the number of RPC hits on mailbox servers.3. Third party applications which using RPC to connect will also cause issues.4. The most neglected but very important thing that you may want to look at is your domain controller configurations as well. I would check to see if I have enough processing capacity on each domain controller. I would follow the 4:1 processor ratio for DCs.Do let us know how it goes.
