ExMerge 2 GB limitation?
When I ran ExMerge using the two step method, then option 1 (to create the pst file), around 2 GB it seems like its not making any more progress. I want to be able to have a pst file and hand it to the user so he can determine what is missing in the calendar. The user has a mailbox size of 4 GB. We are on Exchange 2003 sp2. Is this the 2 GB limitation? I really don't want to import it into the live account using the other method. Is that a must for my case? On a side note, every time I run an ExMerge, does it remove the data off the source (Recovery Storage Group database). I remember years ago it did. Just confirming. Thanks so much. tntrac

Hi, Exmerge can't handle PST's bigger than 2GB (In practicality, it starts to fail when the file grows to about 1.8GB), have a look into this article : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916085, the work around is : You can export mails filtering by date (using exmerge.ini file), so you can divide your mailbox in several pst files for every year. If everyday you want to export the last year/months mails as a backup, you can use "exmergeini.exe" application ( download here: http://www.exchangeinbox.com/article.aspx?i=61&p=2) to modify exmerge.ini using a batch file. Example: set Year=%Date:~8% set Month=%Date:~3,2% set Day=%Date:~0,2% F:\ExMergeIni.exe SelectMessageEndDate "%Month%/%Day%/%Year% 23:59:58" -f "F:\Exmerge2GB.ini" Or reduce the mailbox size, third party tools also can help. Do let us know if this doesn't help or more info is required. Have a look into this article its one of the best work around : http://gsexdev.blogspot.com/2007/01/exporting-mailbox-larger-then-2-gb-and.htmlRipu Daman Mina | MCSE 2003 & MCSA Messaging | MCC

Regarding ExMerge you will also want to consider the following; ExMerge only supports the ANSI PST Format which has a 2GB limit ExMerge will not warn you if a PST goes over 2GB, it will just corrupt the PST and you won’t know it until you try to open it ANSI PST's actually start to degrade at about 1.8GB so I would not go over that limit in order to ensure the data is recoverable Here is an article on how to script the creation of overflow PST's if you reach the 2GB limit http://theessentialexchange.com/blogs/michael/archive/2009/10/16/exporting-mailboxes-larger-than-2-gb-on-an-exchange-server.aspx Alternatively, you can look at 3rd party tools that can do what you’re asking about and more, like Lucid8's DigiScope http://www.lucid8.com/product/digiscope.asp Troy Werelius www.Lucid8.com
