Event ID: MAPI session exceeded maxiumum of 32 sessions
Hi AllEvery now andthen, one of our users (a random user) cannot use their Outlook to connect to Exchange. There is always a correspinding entry in the Event Log of their Exchange server - EventID 9646. "Mapi session "/o=xx/ou=xx/cn=Recipients/cn=user1" exceeded the maximum of 32 objects of type "session"."I have searched on MS KB's etc, which state that this may be down to an application opening MAPI threads on their behalf, which can't be the answer in our case.Has anyone experience this? Usually, everything is fine after 10 minutes, but I was just wondering.Thx

Hello,I guess, you have searched below KB. As you said you don't have any application which is opening MAPI threads then there could be two other possibilities.Event ID 9646 is logged in the application event log of your Exchange Server 2003 computer when a client opens many MAPI sessionshttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/8420221. As mentioned in same KB, you are using Microsoft Office Outlook 2007, and you add a large additional mailbox to your profile. For example, this issue may occur if the additional mailbox contains more than one thousand folders. Check the workaorund given in KB toclear the Download shared folders (excludes mail folders).2. Do you have Windows 2003 SP2 installed recently? If so, make sure that you have below KB installed to disable SNP feature because this might be caused by it also...An update to turn off default SNP features is available for Windows Server 2003-based and Small Business Server 2003-based computershttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/948496Amit Tank | MVP - Exchange | MCITP:EMA MCSA:M | http://ExchangeShare.WordPress.com

Please change the value of KeepAliveTime, it will improve things for all users because it changes the time it takes for a session to time out. We decrease the value so connections don't hang around too long which will cause too many connections to stay open. Please see KB 324270 Please run the ExBPA for health check on the exchange server The following threads will help you to troubleshoot the issue: Outlook not able to open default e-mail folders (Similar Case) Outlook 2003 can't connect to Exchange Server (Similar Case)

HiThanks for the links...I checked out ESM > Logons and, sure enough, the user has about 30 odd sessions open. The user closed Outlook and the sessions disappeared. So - it points to an Outlook issue - what would be the recommended fix? Rebuild the profile, re-install Outlook?Cheers

Reduce the value of KeepAliveTime would be one method as I posted above, or we can change value of the maximum permitted MAPI sessions per user by default, this method is in the KB on Amits post
