Version '8.0.685.25' means Exchange 2007 without any service pack. For Server 2008 you need to install from Exchange 2007 SP1 (or SP2) media or download from here:http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=44C66AD6-F185-4A1D-A9AB-473C1188954C&displaylang=enSounds like you are building a backup server here since you only want the management tools. It would be wise to standardize on a service pack level across your org though ... or you might have backup servers with a newer version than your Exchange servers.
