Error 1920. Service 'Windows Font Cache Service' (FontCache) failed to start

Hi,

I've been trying for weeks now to try to get Office Professional Plus 2013 to install on Windows 8 Pro. My system has been running perfectly otherwise.

When I try to install Office 2013, I get the following message (excerpt from log file):

I have tried everything I can think of, and everything on every thread I've found on related topics. No luck. If I try to start the service myself via services.msc I get the following message:

The Windows Font Cache Service service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some Services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs. Any assistance anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated!

It's the problem when upgrading, Please remove or uninstall previous version of MS Office(like office 2007/2010) and try to install again..Reply here if not solved...

I tried removing Office 2010 and I am still getting the same error message.  Do you have any other suggestions?
December 1st, 2012 4:16am

Hi Script Guru,

I don't have any other Office versions installed to uninstall. The only other Microsoft products I have is Visual Web Developer Express, and SQL Server 2012. I'm wondering if one of them has some shared DLL or if it installed a portion of Visio or something... Any other ideas?? It's a fairly "fresh" build of Windows 8 Pro.

Thanks!

Okay Friend Thanks for commenting, I think that's a different issue please give me some time after checking i will  give you my suggestions. Till then use your old Office version..

FontCache service is supposed to be one of those always running services. Unfortunately Office 2013 actually requires access to start and stop this service. If the service is broken then Office install will not be able to complete.

I first suggest we try and fix the fontcache service on this machine. I found an article on how to "rebuild" build the font cache which I suppose may help if the cache is corrupt it could be what is causing the service to fail.

http://www.ehow.com/how_7197467_rebuild-font-cache.html

and

http://blog.ffextensionguru.com/2011/03/15/oddities-with-64-bit-firefox-4-part-3/

[Pasted below if you don't want to click the link]

1. Type services.msc into the Start Search bar and hit Enter.

2. Find the Windows Font Cache Service, select it and hit Stop.

3. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local requires admin privileges

4. Delete the FontCache dat files. (They will be regenerated over time.)

5. Restart the Windows Font Cache Service.

Also you might check the actual FntCache.dll to ensure it is the Microsoft installed file. Several sites suggested virus scanning which I think is probably unrelated but can't hurt.

I wonder if when you manually try and start the fontcache service if it writes something to the event log about why it is failing?

Hi Micrey,

I'm not in front of the computer at this exact moment in time and unfortunately will not be until later today. I do know that when I try to start the service (it is set to Automatic, but it is not running), services.msc says:

"The Windows Font Cache Service service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some Services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs."

I'll check the event log again when I get home, but I didn't see any further info in there last time. If I find anything I'll let you know.

Thanks for the eHow article. I'll give that a whirl. I am running the latest version of Norton Internet Security. I've tried uninstalling it and running the MS Office 2013 install, but same error. Maybe I'll try uninstalling it, fixing the font cache as per eHow, and attempt the Office 2013 install again.

Thanks again!

Please do let me know how it goes. Please do not uninstall or disable your anti-virus. The anti-virus scan would be only to check if some malicious program replaced your copy of FntCache.dll with a bad copy. I would hope the anti-virus program is not the one stopping the FontCache service.

Hi,

I left Norton Internet Security alone, and got as far as #4, then rebooted. I have verified that FNTCAHCE.DAT was regenerated after reboot, and that FntCache.dll is from Microsoft (version 6.2.9200.16433). I do not have any strange or messed up fonts anywhere.

I deleted the FNTCACHE.DAT file from C:\Windows\System32\.

The only DAT file is the C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local folder is tokens.dat.

Unfortunately, I still get the same error 1920 about the Windows Font Cache service. Is there another version of it around somewhere on my system?

Thanks,

Roger

I've been communicating with the people work on the FontCache service and they have never seen an issue like this. They suggested we enable "FontCache" logs via the following steps:

  1. Start event viewer (search Settings for Event).
  2. On the View menu, make sure Show Analytic and Debug Logs is checked. You may need to wait a minute for the tree in the left pane to update.
  3. In the tree, expand the following nodes: Application and Service Logs Microsoft Windows DirectWrite-FontCache.
  4. Right-click on Tracing (under DirectWrite-FontCache) and choose Enable Log.

If you could enable the logs, then try starting the service again, then look for any logging entries in your event logs.

Hi Michael,

After attempting another install, there are no new errors in the event log that I can find. This one remains:

Product: Microsoft Office Shared MUI (English) 2013 -- Error 1920. Service 'Windows Font Cache Service' (FontCache) failed to start.  Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services.

When the installation attempts to close after being unsuccessful, I have also always gotten the following:

"Microsoft Setup Bootstrapper has stopped working.

A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

December 9th, 2012 11:40pm

My next idea would be to replace the fontcache service with a dummy exe using "installutil". Really Office doesn't need the fontcache to do anything - the installer just expects it to be in a working state enough to start/stop it. I think rather than manually replacing the fontcache service it makes more sense to reinstall windows or run a "pc refresh" if you have that option from your Settings->General->Refresh.

In summary Office cannot install if the fontcache service cannot run. This dependency is new in Office 2013. Replacing the fontcache service with a "dummy exe" would work around the issue but I think it makes more sense to get Windows back into an original working state.

If you do decide to reinstall/refresh Windows please pay close attention to see if installing some program again puts the fontcache service in this broken state. That will help us to reproduce the error here and then fix the problem.

Sorry that I do not have a better answer!

From someone on the fontcache team:

"Its possible that after the first failure to start, subsequent attempts would fail for an unrelated reason, in which case wed need to reboot to determine the true cause. Id suggest the following experiment:

  1. Enable the DirectWrite-FontCache/Tracing log as previously described (if it isnt already).
  2. Restart the system.
  3. Check the status of the FontCache service via Task Manager:
    1. Start task manager (e.g., by right-clicking the task bar)
    2. Show more details
    3. Click the Services tab
    4. Check the status for FontCache (not FontCache3.0.0.0, which is something different).
  4. If the service still failed to start, see if theres anything in the FontCache event log. If so, wed like to see those events.
  5. If theres nothing in the FontCache event log, check the System event log (Windows Logs / System) for an event logged by the Service Control Manager. The SCM should log an error if a service fails to start, and that should at least give us an error code if not much more.

The FontCache service is an important system component. Replacing it with a do-nothing version might unblock Offset setup but would bad in other ways. If we cant find the cause, the only other thing I could suggest would be to use System Restore."

This mostly happens if the Windows Font Cache service is not running, You've to manually start the service and retry to proceed with the installation.

I'm also encountering the same issue. I've tried all you said. but it didn't work.  And I tried to uninstall office 2013, but still couldn't uninstall neither. Said:

"Microsoft Setup Bootstrapper has stopped working"

I've enabled  DirectWrite-FontCache/Tracing log  and there hadn't any log when I started the services.

BTW, I found an error log on System log:

The server {14286318-B6CF-49A1-81FC-D74AD94902F9} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.

can you help me to solve it, I don't want to reinstall windows!

So, i tried to install office looking what happens with the service. It just stops. I immediatly click on "Start" buttom of properties window. (The service properties)

It works fine.

//ESPAOL //

* Ir al panel de control de Windows

* Click en "Herramientas administrativas"

* Click en "Servicios"

* Buscar y hacer 2 click en  "Windows Font Cache Service"

* Iniciar la instalacin de Office 2013

* Observar que el servicio se detiene automaticamente

* Hacer click en iniciar inmediatamente.

* Eso es todo.

I think I found the source of the problem:

I have installed WP SDKs for VS and I have Font Cache and Font Cache 3.0.0.0!

The second is installed with one WP SDK and it have troubles with it, because it overwrites the original FontCache!!! So if you want to install MSO13, you'll have to remove the WP SDKs first, then Office, then reinstall WP SDKs.

I hope it's help you too. (Win8 Pro 64x)

I also have this problem, nothing I have seen works at all. Started when trying to install Visio 2013 but could not install. I then changed my Office setup to remove Lync but it uninstalled everything now I have no Office at all.

I have changed the service to automatic, no fix.

I have changed to logon to "Local system account and ticked the interact with desktop", no fix"

I have deleted any reference to fntcache.dat, no fix.

I have uninstalled by AV, no fix.

I have no existing office products installed as it was a clean build for windows 8.

I have run sfc /scannow, no fix.

I also get the Microsoft Bootstrapper has stopped working error after I cancel the install.

This is taking all my time can someone please fix this

The solution to your problem is incredibly simple

if you are getting the error message that you say you are then it means that the windows font cache service has most likely been disabled

Here's how we rectify the problem

  1. open the services app by typing services.msc into start menu and opening the services app
  2. the next step is to locate the windows font cache service
  3. Double-click the service, this should open the properties windows, if not open the properties by right clicking and selecting properties
  4. Under start-up type select the manual option
  5. then hit apply the hit ok
  6. that's it your problem is now solved

I had the exact same problem as this. I followed the above instructions and they worked perfectly but just want to add a couple of things for some people that may not be as knowledgeable. When you are on the services part of task manager at the bottom right of the screen is the services button with a blue/yellow shield  that enables you to have admin privileges which you will need to turn off tuneup utilities and also to start the fontcache service. You have to Right click on the fontcache Service and change the start-up type from disabled to automatic. You can then change the service status to start from stop. Press apply and then ok. Make sure you disable TuneUp utilities in this section also and then go ahead and install your Microsoft office. This worked perfectly for me. Thanks to EdwardMova for his post and I hope this helps other people

Playing with Windows 10 Enterprise preview nothing I could find on the net would let the FontCache service start and the System Center 2012 R2 (CU3) deployment tasksequence would fail as the Office 2013 SP1 installation fails to start the service

The solution for me was to isolate the service to it's own svchost process

I'm adding it here as nothing I could find helped me and every search I did included this page in the result

REG ADD "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Svchost" /v LocalServiceTemp /t REG_MULTI_SZ /d FontCache /f

REG ADD "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\FontCache" /v ImagePath /t REG_EXPAND_SZ /d "%SystemRoot%\system32\svchost.exe -k LocalServiceTemp" /f

When the installation is done I'm restoring the FontCache service ImagePath using:

REG ADD "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\FontCache" /v ImagePath /t REG_EXPAND_SZ /d "%SystemRoot%\system32\svchost.exe -k LocalService" /f

REG DELETE "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Svchost" /v LocalServiceTemp /F

Hope it will be of use to someone :)

Thanks to D.T.H's post, I fixed the issue on a client's Win7 computer by:

1. From a machine that the Windows Font Service will start on, export: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\FontCache
2. copy the .reg file to the problem computer, double-clicked the file (or open regedit as administrator and import the file).
3. Reboot pc

Issue was resolved.

My problem was caused by AVG PC Tuneup, I had enabled the turbo mode and it turned off the backgroundservices for instance. Including the Windows Front Cache Service. After that I enabled the normal mode, and it was fixed. So if you use AVG PC Tuneup or other PC Tuneup tools, disable the turbo. :)

I have tried every solution provided online,  in windows 10 TP to install office 2013.

Found this error " Error 1920. Service 'Windows Font Cache Service' (FontCache) failed to start. Verify you have sufficient privileges to start system services."

I have tried to start in services.msc \ Windows Font Cache Service, found following message:

"The Windows Font Cache Service service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some Services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs."

Finally i got this website and fallowed the following web link and fontCache service start to running and installed office 2013.

http://batcmd.com/windows/10/services/fontcache/

Hope it will help.
