Error 1041 - Unable to recover mailbox
I have run into a serious issue as it turns out relating to the restoration of certain user's mailboxes. This all started from a mailbox move from one store to another. The moves failed and left two mailboxes showing in both the destination and original store. I fixed the issues and moved the users mailboxes back to their original location. They are now receiving mail again, however I cannot restore their lost mail from backup. I have tried ExMerge and Merge/Copy from the Recovery Storage Group with no success. The error I get is '1041 - The attempt to log on to the Microsoft Exchange Server computer has failed. The MAPI provider failed.'Has anyone encountered this and/or been able to fix this?Particulars:Windows 2003Exchange 2003 SP2

Hi Hal4tide, There are two Active Directory attributes that link a database copy in the RSG with its original database: -msExchMailboxGUID (set on the user object that owns the mailbox) -msExchOrigMDB (set on each database object in the RSG) For Exmerge to work, we have to match the above two attributes, not sure if you had ever recreate the original mailbox store, if so, the second attribute can be changed. I suggest you check the following settings: 1. Using ADSIEDIT, copy the DN (DistinguishedName) of Mailbox Store. Select and copy the entire Value field to the Windows clipboard CN=MB2,CN=SG2,CN=InformationStore,CN=CHILD-GC-E2K3,CN=Servers,CN=Site3,CN=Administrative Groups,CN=Generic Organization,CN=Microsoft Exchange,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=root,DC=org 2. Find the RSG database object in the Configuration Container. 3. Open the properties of the database object, and find the msExchOrigMDB attribute. Compare with the value with the DN of mailbox store. If they're different, please delete the DN from the Edit Attribute text box. Paste in the DN from the other database, and click Set and then OK. 4. Force AD replication. 5. Run Exmerge. Thanks, Elvis
