My Guess would be the exchange server object still exists in AD. You need to remove this server object first then run the re-install and it will be successful. you could do this using the ADSIEDIT MMC snap in which comes with the Windows 2003 Support tools (on the cd under support) or using a switch of setup. I am not sure what the switch is in 2007, you would have to run setup.exe /help:uninstall to find out the correct parameters to use for removing a server or the org object from AD.

Hi William as Johan wrote, You must remove old server entries from Active Directory. You can use ADSI edit, it is easy. The Adsiedit.msc GUI tool is included when you install Windows Server 2003 Support Tools from the product CD, and It will be same on 2007. here you go for help: http://technet2.microsoft.com/WindowsServer/en/library/ebca3324-5427-471a-bc19-9aa1decd3d401033.mspx

Hi Marian Actually removing exchange objects is a recipe for more problems. I deleted them and now I have a major problem on hand. Microsoft strongly discourage that. (see http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb232078.aspx) However, I got through the first problem by using setup.com /M:recoverServer but now I don't know how to add Exchange USG back into my forest in order to continue. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998656.aspx

This one worked well. Installed the support tool in the CD of "Win2k3 Enterprise R2 x64"media and opened the console cmd in : Start->All Programs->Windows Support Tool->Command Prompt Typed ADSIEdit.msc on the command prompt In ADSIEdit tree, went to Configuration->CN=Services->CN=Microsoft Exchange. Then open the setup log of Exchange 2007 in C:\ExchangeSetupLogs\ExchangeSetup.log and find the Server object in AD that the setup detected. Then find that particular server object entries in Configuration->CN=Services->CN=Microsoft Exchange in which the server name (where the failed install happened) exists and delete them. Then I was able to re-run the Exchange 2007 install. The reason my Exchange 2007 failed to install was that there was lingering entries of Exchange 2003 in my server registry. So I cleaned up these and rerun the Exchange 2007 install

Hello,Any help would be appreciated. This is similar to what I am going through. I am Windows nub so...lolI was hired by a company recently and have inherited a messed up exchange install. It seems that somehow the server 64 bit exchange was hacked to run on 2k3 32 bit server. Not knowing I just got a 64 bit 2k3 and did a reinstall and then reinstalled 2k7 under a different host name. Then I was told to just change the name of the exchange server I had built to fit the naming convention of the network. I bet that made a few of you laugh. Dumb nub mistake but hey I am a Linux/BSD guy.So I have been trying to get things back in order. I would love to clean all of this out of AD and start over. I am tried the setup /mode:RecoverServer. This kinda worked but there seems to be a big mess in AD. Most likely due to the name change. I was planning on using ASDI Edit to remove all traces of these servers and hope for a fresh start.Any comments, thoughts would be appreciated. If I had my way I would just rebuild AD. I also found out previous SysAd didn't follow proper back up policies and there is no copy of the PDC I could roll back to.Thanks in advance for any information.

There actually is a 32bit edition of E12 available, however it is NOT SUPPORTED in the live environment, it is for demo/testing purpose. I am assuming your predecessor installed this & decided to use it as a production server. If all you did was rename the host name of the server then you shouldnt have too big a problem here, I think the problem is more to do with the Server permissions rather than anything else. In Active Directory Users & Computers make sure the host name of the server is a part of Exchange Install Servers & Exchange Servers groups. You could also re-run the preps as an added precaution then allow DC's to replicate before restarting exchange. I had endless problems trying to get 2 vhd's from microsoft to talk to one another for a Demo we are doing and this was pretty much the procedure I had to follow, after having forced one of the tombstoned DC's to demote & then promote to DC again. It was a nightmare.

My problem is strange, I had a seemingly perfect exchange 2007 server installation. I filled all the prerequisites for installing sp1 and then went ahead and started it. It failed during the tools installation giving me an error message about not having the most recent version of unified messaging. Since then, I've deleted the failed server instance from ad, and restored it, and I still have the same error. We're going on 9 hours now.when I use recoverserver I get the error that the roles are already installed. When I run the wizard I get the old "inconsistent state" song and dance. I'm getting seriously dizzy from the circles I'm running in here.

We had a very simple solution to this problem that I appreciate not everyone can do. We changed the name of the server we were installing Exchange on.

Microsoft now has a TechNet article for this. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc411332(EXCHG.80).aspx Basically it is using ADSI Edit to remove the Exchange Server Object from Active Directory and then remove the Excahnge 2007 server from 2 Exchange Security Groups. I followed it exactly and now am able to reinstall MS Exchange 2007 as if it was never there.

I think William meant setup.com /m:recoverserver /dcomain controller name. Thanks

This worked like a charm. This is the type of help we need. My problem: Installed a production exchange2007 server and started playing around with the gal. Screwed everything up including my black berry enterprise server. No big deal it was a member server........... So i figure I'd reload and build exchange 2007 from scratch because its simple to do. I got this error message off the installation cd (after i member joined to my AD) "The Exchange Server is in an inconsistent state. Only disaster recovery mode is a available". I didnt even think to go into the configuration of the ADSI EDIT and delete out the whole "Microsoft Exchange" folder under services. I did and it worked like a F*&#ing charm. Good work Donato Espera. Regards, JJS
