Email count is incorrect while the outbox is empty

As you can see on the following capture, my Outlook 2013 outbox indicates there are 3 unread messages. However, the outbox is empty. And the status bar shows 3 items in total and 2 of them are unread. These are totally wrong. There should be something wrong with the counter. I tried right clicking the outbox, and then select "Clean up folder" or "Delete all", nothing changed.  I also tried "Send and Receive all folders" and "Update folder", same results. I don't want to rebuild the profile. Or I have to redo settings, signatures and etc. Any other way to fix this?

What's the result in OWA?

Please go to File > Info > Account settings> Email Tab > Hight your Exchange account and click "Change"

1. Enable "Use Cached Exchange Mode" and set the "Mail to keep offline" to "All", click Next/OK to check the result.

2. Disable "USe Cached Exchange mode" and your Exchange profile would run in Exchange online mode, check the result as well.

Hello, any update?

Hi Tony. Before I posted this thread, I unchecked the setting "Use Cached Exchange Mode" of my default mailbox. And now I cannot get into Outlook. When I launch Outlook, it's just stuck at the splash screen and indicates "Loading profile". I tried safe mode, same thing. What's wrong?

Caused by data file (PST/OST)? corrupted Outlook profile ? I cannot confirm that.

At this point, we may use Scanpst.exe to scan your PST/OST file and then reload it to test: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/272227

Or we can totally create a new Outlook profile to resync a new OST file.

Hi Tony. I went to Control Panel->Email->Email Accounts, enabled "Use Cached Exchange mode", and then Outlook can start normally. However, if I disable "Use Cached Exchange mode", the Outlook won't start and pops up below error:

And if I Enable "Use Cached Exchange Mode" and set the "Mail to keep offline" to "All" and then restart Outlook, the issue persists, Outbox count still indicates "3".

BTW, this is my work email account. It works fine on my work PC and the version is also 2013.

I would like to know whether this abnormal behavior would happen in a new creating profile. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/829918

Let me know the result. Thanks.

The issue seems to be gone in the newly created profile. Are you suggesting that this is the solution? I don't think it's a good idea to fix all issues by just creating a new profile and then delete the old one.

Creating a new profile could refresh all of things. That's the quick way for fix the problem if profile is corrupted.

For this issue, We may have these choice.

Run "Outlook.exe /cleanprofile" to remove invalid profile keys and recreates default registry keys where applicable.

Run "Outlook.exe /cleanpst" to launches Outlook with a clean Personal Folders file (.pst).

What's the consequence of running these two commands? Will they cause any data lost?

Since you have all of backup data in your current PST and create a new profile would let it work, you don't worry about lossing the source data.

By the way, have you tried to scan PST/OST file already through ScanPST tool? I have not received your feedback. Thanks.

After using Scanpst.exe to scan and repair the pst file, the three hidden emails in the Outbox are able to be seen. And the issue is no more after I delete them. Thank you for your support. You may now close the case.
