Email Won't Delete
Interesting problem that I am hoping someone here might have encountered and can assist. Here is the setup. Exchange Server receives email after it has been scanned by Trend Micro Scanmail. We have a quaratine folder for emails that we do not deliver to internal recipients. The email must meet certain guidlines to be considered non-deliverable. We have started to see a problem where some emails from the quarantine folder will not delete. We get the following error message when a delete is attempted: "Some items cannot be deleted. They were either moved, or already deleted, or access was denied." The window has a show help button on it when clicked it shows the following text: "This error may be the result of trying to delete more than 4,000 messages at one time. Outlook can delete no more than 4,000 messages when it is working with a server message store. To avoid this error, delete fewer than 4,000 messages in a single operation. It is also possible that you do not have the appropriate permissions to delete messages. If you need to delete content from a folder owned by someone else, contact the owner of the folder to obtain the necessary permissions, or have the owner delete the content for you." Now, I am deleting a single message from the inbox of an add-on mailbox. I am an administrator on the network and have deleted many thousands of messages from this same location prior to now. Does anyone have any ideas as to why outlook and maybe ultimately exchange would prevent the deletion of an email message in this manner? I have seen this when multiple delete commands were sent (shared mailboxes for example). If you refresh the view in Outlook is the message still there?OliverOliver Moazzezi | Exchange MVP, MCSA:M, BA (Hons) Anim | http://www.exchange2007.com http://www.exchange2010.com http://www.cobweb.com |

Yep, refreshing does not make a difference. It is a shared mailbox as you say as both myself and the IS Mgr have access to it. I can even shut down outlook and it is still there. Is there a way to find messages in a given mailbox using exchange and delete them server side?--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- No warranties are expressed or implied with any code being posted/emailed.

I would try to delete the message using OWA. I have found times when OWA is able to do things that the Outlook client just can't do.

In addition to Mike's suggestion, try shift-delete in Outlook.

This worked like a charm. I tried to use Mike's answer as well, but was unable to access the shared mailbox via the OWA portal. There did not seem to be an option to view the shared mailbox. SHIFT-DELETE.. might I ask if you happen to know what microsoft does differently with that delete command vs the plain old delete that causes this to work? This is plain curiosity on my part as I am the local developer here at the company. such things interest me.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- No warranties are expressed or implied with any code being posted/emailed.

A shift-delete is a hard delete, which bypasses the Deleted Items folder and puts the deleted message directly into the dumpster ( Still recoverable if deleted item retention is enabled). As an interesting side note, the Dumpster is improved in Exchange 2010:http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2009/09/25/452632.aspx

This would be the same shared account as mentioned in the OP but on Outlook 2010. We've tried to create test appointments either recurring or not and same error until you restart Outlook or shift things around like enable/disable calendars etc etc..

In OWA if you can to connect to a shared mailbox, you log into OWA using your own login. Then by your name there is a little drop down arrow, you can then click on that and enter the name of the shared mailbox. It will then open that mailbox in a new window.

Check on the exchange server and see if you are seeing errors about to many object types being opened at the same time. If that is the case, do a search for the error message. There is a regedit you can do to fix the problem.
