Email Monitoring System
Hi i have an Exchange server 2007 running on SBS 2008 Server. Couple of days back i ran into trouble suddenly it stopped recieving emails from outside the network, I figured out the problem was with my firewall and somehow i fixed it and its fine. But i noticed the problem through the report of one of my client which made me to ask this question. Can we setup a email monitoring system some how so that if autmatically sends email every couple of hours to an external domain and it recieves automatically email from external domain and if anything wrong happens it should notify me, Is it possible ? if yes can anyone please help me .....

It's possible. You'll need to find an autoresponder to do the return email. Once you've got that, you can script a scheduled task to send an email to that autoreponder at set intervals and then watch for the return. If you include a date/time stamp in the subject line of the emails when you generate them, you can use that to report on round-trip times while you're at it. Two different methods I have used are to look for the return messages (both PowerShell scripts) 1. Check for the return in the message tracking logs. 2. Set up a mailbox for the retruns and check for them there using the EWS Managed API.

If you have an autoresponder you can use to send back a response when it receives an email, I can show you how to set up a monitoring system using that. Do you have an autoresponder?

Check with your ISP and see if they have one you can use. It will have to be a computer that's off your network, that will send an automatic reply in response to any email it receives.

We use NetIQ to monitor TCP port 25 on our edge servers. Aslo our email relay vendor Postini, a google company can send keep live message to our edge servers too. it may be too expensive for you. However, you may ask your ISP to see if they can monitor the port for you. There are lots of freeware too that can monitor TCP ports. As Mjolinor said, the monitor software should be located at reliable network outside of your network. your ISP is the first choice.

You can implement the monitor internally. You just need a reliable external feedback to use as a test trigger. I've done this using a scheduled task to send a test email, and then checking he hub transport logs for the returns and sending an alert email if they don't show up. It's not fancy, but the price is right.
