Either there is no default mail client of the current mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request-----error Outlook 2010
I've tried EVERYTHING suggested in this link (http://blog.timolthof.com/outlook-no-default-mail-client-error/) and everything google and bing and still this message keeps popping up.  Now when I do a windows search for email, I'm not able to view the email due to this message.
For the record, I am running W7 Ultimate x64 and connected via Excange Server.  I do have another system that is running Office 2010 with none of these problems so I don't know if it's related to Exchange though the searches I've done don't allude to that.
What's up?

Hi,

I understand that when you tried to open Outlook 2010 beta on the Windows 7 64-bit computer, you encountered the following error:

"Either there is not default mail client of the current mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run Microsoft Outlook and set it as the default mail client."

You have checked the settings under the registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Clients\Mail\Microsoft Outlook

I understand the inconvenience you have encountered and appreciate the time and effort you spent on this issue. Please be assured that I will try my best to help you.

Now let’s troubleshoot the issue by the suggestions below. Please check the results after each suggestion until the problem is resolved.

Suggestion 1: manually set Outlook 2010 as the default e-mail client on Windows 7:

===================

1.       Click Start.

2.       Type "default programs" in the Search box.

3.       Click Default Programs under Programs in the search results.

4.       Now click Set your default programs.

5.       Highlight Microsoft Outlook on the left.

6.       Click Set this program as default.

7.       Click OK.

Suggestion 2: Start the Outlook program in safe mode

==============

1.       Click Start, point to All Programs, and then point to Microsoft Office.

2.        Press and hold the CTRL key, and then click the Outlook program you want to start.

If the problem does not occur in the safe mode, this issue might be related to some third-party add-ins in the Outlook program, we can try to disable them. Normally, you could do the following to disable the conflict add-ins in your Outlook program:

Disable add-ins

***************************

  1. Click File menu, click Options >  Add-in, click Go button in the Manage: Com-in Add.
  1. Check if there are any add-ins, clear the checkbox to disable them.
  1. Close the Office program and restart it.
  2. Add one check back each time to the list of Add-In, restart the Office program, and repeat the above procedure. Once the issue reappears again, we can determine which add-in causes this problem and then disable it.

Suggestion 3: Test the issue with a new Windows user account

==============

We can follow the steps in the articles to create a new user account to test the issue. If the problem does not occur in the new user account, some settings in the old account are corrupted. We can copy the main user files from the old account to the new account, delete the old account, and then continue using the new account.

For the detailed steps on how to create a new user account and copy data from the old account to the new account, you can refer to the following articles:

For Windows Vista/Windows 7:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Create-a-user-account

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Fix-a-corrupted-user-profile

Please take your time to try the suggestions and let me know the results at your earliest convenience. . If anything is unclear or if there is anything I can do for you, please feel free to let me know.

Sally, thank you so much for a very detailed and helpful post.  However, none of your suggestions work.  In the first suggestion, (which is all over the internet too) Outlook does not show as one of the programs to choose. I thought this strange, uninstalled and reinstalled and the same thing happens.

However, I did many hours of searching and it does appear it's a problem with Microsoft Sync center which is turned on.  I'm on a domain and need to search the domain many times during the day and obviously this is needed in order to search.

Search does find things but I also get this message (multiple times) when the search pulls up emails.  I immediately get the error when clicking on any email in the search AND, the emails will not open due to the error.  Many posts have stated that this only happens with x64 Office (which I have) but on another system that is not part of a domain or running Sync, I don't have this problem.

My guess is that MS has to put out a fix for this. It's very aggravating.

Again, thanks for all your help.

Hi,

Thank you for your reply. From your description, the problem now is that we are unable to set Microsoft Outlook as the default program, as it is not listed in the left panel of Control Panel\Programs\Default Programs\Set Default Programs. The problem persists after uninstalling and reinstalling the Office program.

I understand the inconvenience you have encountered, and I appreciate your time and effort on this issue. Please be assured that I will try my best to help you.

We can also go to Control Panel\Programs\Default Programs\Set Associations. When you find the protocols: FEED, MAILTO, OUTLOOKFEED, OUTLOOKFEEDS, STSSYNC, WEBCAL, WEBCALS, click the Change Program button, and change the default program to Microsoft Outlook. Also check the checkbox before: Always use the selected program to handle this protocol.

Then, check again if it works this time.

Best Regards,

Sally Tang

Hello Sally,

I am having the same issue and I tried all of your suggestions also without success. In regards to your most recent suggestion, I don't even see these protocols listed in the set associations window. After the file extensions, the only protocols I see are:

DAAP

FTP

HTTP

HTTPS

ITMS

ITMSS

ITPC

LDAP

MMS

PCAST

Hi

I had the same problem. It has been driving me mad. It was caused by MobileMe trying to sync my contacts, but it happened with other programmes. I used the solution offered by MS in relation to outlook 2002:

If all else fails, you may have a corrupted key in the Registry (a database of user preferences and system settings in Windows). The only way to resolve this problem is to delete and replace the corrupted key. To delete it, access the Registry Editor. Open the Start menu, select Run, type regedit in the Open field, and click OK. The Registry Editor will appear on-screen. Peruse the folders to locate the HKEY_LOCAL_ MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLIENTS\MAIL\MICROSOFT OUTLOOK key. Highlight it and press the DELETE key. Verify that you want to delete the key and then close the Registry Editor.

Now that the damaged key is gone, put a good one in its place.{ Open Microsoft Outlook and select the Detect And Repair option from the program’s Help menu. Follow the on-screen instructions to launch Detect And Repair, which will automatically identify the missing key and replace it.} I didn't have to do this bit. Next time I opened outlook it said it wasn't the default and would i like it to be. I clicked yes and its worked ever since.

I tried this one, but it did not work either. I am also using Windows 7 64 and Office 2010 64 (with Outlook). The problems come up for me in Adobe 9 Professional and Blackberry Desktop Manager. (I would note that on the Blackberry forums, this is a huge topic of conversation since no one can sync their phones anymore with Windows 7 64 it seems.)

NOTE: I was on the phone with Microsoft tech support yesterday for 2 1/2 hours trying to get this resolved. I was bounced from Windows 7 help to Outlook 2010 technical support. They were unable to solve the problem. Amusingly (or frustratingly), I got the following email after the call: "It was my pleasure to work with you on your issue, case # 1134392689. I understand that your issue might not be resolved, if you need further assistance, please reply to this email and we will contact you. Make sure to include the best time and contact number for reaching you. Please allow at least one business day for a response. We will continue to follow up with you via email. If we don't hear from you within four days then we will close the case "Resolved"." In other words, they couldn't resolve it, but will file it as a resolved case if I don't get back to them. One imagines the statistics within Microsoft of innumerable "resolved" cases that were actually not.

The answer (really the reasons for the problem) to this issue appears to be here. On this single page advisory from Microsoft, you will find the error message and the reasons:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd941355.aspx

Basically, if the application uses 32 bit MAPI software, that issues a call to Outlook, it will not work until/unless updated. As noted in this MS explanation: "32-bit MAPI applications are not supported to run on a computer installed with 64-bit Outlook and 64-bit Windows. The application developer must update and rebuild the application as a 64-bit application for the 64-bit platform."

Windows 7 64 bit alone is not a problem, so long as the Outlook version is 32 bit, because it is the interaction between the 32 bit software issuing a call to Outlook is 32 bit to 32 bit. But if the software issuing the call to Outlook is 32 bit and Outlook is the 64 bit version, then it will not work, unless that software has been updated to work with Outlook 64 bit.

This is a problem right now, for example, with Adobe Acrobat Professional (if you try to mail a page from the software) and Blackberry Desktop Manager (if you try to sync your addressbook).

There are two solutions, it appears. One is to uninstall 64 bit Outlook and reinstall as 32 bit. The other is to wait for the software that is not interfacing with Outlook 64 bit to be updated to be able to do so.

Hi,

Well I'm going to add my two cents worth here and just say that I have tried all the solutions that have been posted, as well as a reformat of my hard drive and a reinstall of my OS Windows 7 x64 and MS Office 2010, and I still get the following:

Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run Microsoft Outlook and set it as the default mail client.

Very unsettling to say the least, I have been trying to solve this problem for over two weeks now and no matter what I do the problem is still there, although I am able to get my email ok.

It sure will be nice when Microsoft can get this figured out, I am inclined to agree with Lifesaver1 in his post that there is some kind of incompatibility issue between Windows 7 x64 and MS Office 2010 for sure.

Thank you for listening to my rant

Hello All, I've just started getting this problem while trying to sync my HTC Touch Pro2 with my PC running Win 7 64-bit and Office 2010 64-bit. The problem doesn't exist when running Office 2010 32-bit and therefore I suggest that lifesaver1 above is correct. SO my question now is there an update to MobileMe or a 64-bit version to solve the issue? Those of you having the same error with other applications should check to see if the problem is still there when you use 32-bit Office. It's not a Windows problem or an Office problem, you just need all other apps to be 64-bit that calls Outlook if running 64-bit Outlool.

Thanks,

Paul

Sarumane... thank you for your post. I run Win7-64 and Outlook 2010.  Your suggested method of forcing my Outlook to reconfigure to default - triggering the automatic question dialog to set it as the default mail client worked perfectly.  Again, thank you for providing the method.  For others however, I may suggest that they add one step.  Once you browse to the registry key, in order to cover yourself, right-click the key, select export and save the key to a location you can later easily find. Other than that - Bravo Zulu to Sarname!

Hey All, Yes this is a very frustrating issue... MobileMe does not work with the 64-bit version of outlook and barely works with the 32-bit version either. My suggestion is that everyone who bouth MobileMe from Apple demand a full refund of the 99.00/yr fee until they fix the issue. The app is useless as it sits now for Outlook users.

Hi Chris

I have the same issue as you got. you can go to Control panel => Program => highlight MS office 2010 then repair it.

then it will listed on your default program.

but, the error still happens even after I did set the default email client to outlook.

Wish MS can release a patch/hotfix to fix it.

Bryan

Hello Every body,

i just got a 64-Bit OS and problems started when synchronizing with outlook 2010. all suggestions failed, actually all software providers made updates for their products to support the 64-Bit systems except microsoft themselves,

acrobat X solved its problems with outlook 2010, Autodesk 2010 solved their problems, Apple "i-phones" solved their problems except microsoft products: windows mobile device center and microsoft office communicator" seems to me microsoft keep losing in the development race.

Outrageous! Here it is October 30, 2012 and Microsoft has still not resolved this problem. And these doofusses want us to go to Windows 8??  Nope, not until this is fixed. If this is not fixed by January 2013, I will ditch Microsoft and all its stuff permanently. Either go with Apple or Linux. Or perhaps Google-Android will come out with an Operating system. Heck, I could ditch Microsoft Office right now and use Google Apps. Microsoft used to be reliable about fixing problems such as this, but no more.

I had this issue while attempting to sync my Smartphone (Samsung SGH-i617) with Outlook 2010.  Forget about messing with your registry.  Instead, check to see if you are running a 32- or 64-bit version of MS Office 2010.  If 64-bit, that is where the incompatibility lies.  You have to use the 32-bit version of MS Office as the default; I was told by the Samsung tech that both 32-and 64- bit options exist in the program files, but during installation, 64- bit is the one typically installed.  At any rate, once this was explained to the MS support tech, he did the fix remotely and the problem was immediately resolved.

Note:  I had recently upgraded to Windows 7 64-bit and MS Office 2010.

Irony:  It took the Samsung tech to point out to the MS techs how to fix this . . . wish I could get MS to pick up the $50 tab I paid Samsung for doing their work . . .

Good Luck!

This happen to be the issue for our client. I ran the KB fix that I am sure most of have already done. Client uses Adapt software from their webpage which requires a 32-bit IE9 connection. Well it also requires a 32-bit Outlook. Once I realized that I was opening up a 64-bit Outlook, I reinstalled Office with 32-bit and the error was no longer present. Closed my ticket! Thank you Lifesaver1 for the light bulb moment!

I'm using 64bit MS Office 365 ProPlus with GP 2013 and found this as a fix

From GP  main menu go to Microsoft Dynamics GP/Tools/Setup/System/System Preferences/ and set Email Preferences/Server Type to Exchange  Hit OK to save the change.  Exited GP, logged back in, printed a report to the screen, hit send to - sent as pdf.  It then brought up the Exchange Screen for email information.  Tested by sending to myself and it worked.
