Edge Transport to Client Access Server communication process from the Internet
Please assist: I need to configure an Exchange 2007 environment to communicate through an Edge Transport server. At present all email communications (internal and external) pass through to the CASHUB (combined role) server. I need to gain a clear understanding of how users will connect with Outlook Anywhere and Outlook Web Access from the Internet to the CAS server via the Edge Transport server. I need to be able to document the process and bring about the configuration changes. Assistance would be most appreciated.

Hi, AFAIK you dont need to modify your CAS Server for external users because Edge role will work just with your HUB Server and your CAS Server will be live as its now so dont worry about your CAS configurations just configure the edge sync and every thing will be working as its now. Of course. My existing production environment is in co-existence (Exchange 2003 - 2007). As such all mail flows through the designated public IPs, via the Firewall, mapped to internal IPs and on to the Front End Exchange NLB. Routing Group Connectors allow mail to flow to the Exchange 2007 environment. The Exchange 2007 environment consists of a NLB 2 node Edge cluster, NLB 2 node CASHUB cluster and a 2 node mailbox cluster. Exchange 2007 users are able to connect and receive their mail via the CASHUB configuration that is currently in place., i.e. Auto discover configures users with the CASHUB configuration for Outlook Anywhere, Outlook Web Access etc. The plan is to amend the public IPs so that mail will flow to the Edge NLB and from there to the CASHUB and mailbox clusters. The issue is to gain a clear understanding of how users will connect with Outlook Anywhere and Outlook Web Access from the Internet to the CAS server via the Edge Transport server. I need to be able to document the process and bring about all related configuration changes to ensure seamless continuation of Mail services.

The Edge Transport is for SMTP only. It has nothing to do with OWA, ActiveSync or AutoDiscover. You could also install TMG 2010 on your Edge box to proxy these web services. Mike Crowley Check out My Blog!

So, I need to map a public IP to the CASHUB (for OWA, AutoDiscover, ActiveSync and web related connectivity) and a second public IP for SMTP traffic, mapped to the Edge Server, which will allow mail sent / received via the Edge Server?

Hi, Sorry for late reply. Yes you will need 2 IPs for your Servers as Mike said. Regards. Shafaquat Ali.M.C.I.T.P Exchange 2007/2010, M.C.I.T.P Windows Server 2008, M.C.T.S OCS Server 2007 R2, URL: http://blog.WhatDoUC.net Phone: +923008210320

Hi, You can set two IP address for the Edge server: one is Public IP, the other is internal IP. Then set two IP for the CASHUB, one is Public IP for OWA, Autodiscover and so on, the other is internal IP. Mailbox is one internal IP. Thanks Allen
