EXchange SBS 2003 DNS Domain Issue
Hi here is the situation i have installed Windows server sbs 2003 prem with the dns domain name of "domain-a.co.uk" and then installed exchange and configured "domain-a.co.uk" as thesmtp domain for the exchange organisation. I then changed my mind about using"domain-a.co.uk" for exchange as this domain is a working email domain and i did not want to interfer with its working. so i registered on new domain "domain-b.co.uk" to use as the smtp domain for the exchange organisation. So i have a Windows AD dns domain of "domain-a.co.uk" Windows Exchange SMTP domain of "domain-b.co.uk" But i am having problem sending mail from the exchange server ("domain-b.co.uk") to the pop3 domain ("domain-a.co.uk") the mail just sits in the outgoing smtp connector until it eventually times out I beleive that the exchange server still thinks its default domain is "domain-a.co.uk" and not "domain-b.co.uk" as it should be. i sent an email from "domain-b.co.uk" to fictitous name @googlemail.com and received a ndr email into my "domain-a.co.uk" email account. I have checked the default recpient policy and it is configured to "domain-b.co.uk" I have also configured the mx record on the local "domain-a.co.uk" dns server to point all "domain-a.co.uk"email to the mx record of the isps servers. If i do an nslookup from a local client i can resolve the correct mx records Why does the exchange server still believe it is still configured as "domain-a.co.uk"? i have even reinstalled exchange and this still hasnt worked is it because the Dns Domain is "domain-a.co.uk" and i need to change it?

Did you change your recipient policies? Change all policies from email domain domain-a.co.uk to domain-b.co.uk Deli

hi Deli thanks for your reply Yes i did, i went into system manager,my orgainsation, recipients, recipient policies In here there was only only one policy called default policy, i changed this to "domain-b.co.uk" but it didnt make any difference, its strange because when the email is sitting in the smtp connector queue the mail appears to be sent from domain-b.co.uk but like i said in my previous post the ndr got sent to my domain-a.co.uk account so somewhere within the email must be this domain-a.co.uk address. I have also added another recipient policy to apply the same address but still nothing can be sent i have also manually ran the recipient update services fro both the domain and the org i ran an update and a rebuild but again mail just sits in the queue?

The ndr is now going back to domain-b.co.uk must have been when i rebuilt the gal with the recipient update services. Outgoing mail is still sitting in the outgoing mail queue that is sent to domain-a.co.uk, i telneted to the mx record and attempted to send a manual email into the isp mail server. a message came back saying "needs authentication". I have tried to speak to the isp about getting the right username to allow me access but they dont not allow this type of access. is there any other way of send mail out of my org can i forward mail to another mail server 1st?

You can create an Internet Mail connector with only that domain specified and forward all mails to a smarthost Deli

Yes, but the ISP doesnt accept Smart hosts. Could i use a smart host to someone else? where?

That's what I mean. You can configure different smart hosts for different domains on your exchange server Deli

Your Destination Email server for that domain

The destination IS the smarthost you need to configure in your exchange server

i have tried putting the mx record into the smarthost field (mx00.1and1.co.uk) and also one of the ip addresses that the mx record resolves to ([212.227.15.134]) and the mail still just sits in the queue. i think the problem is still to do with security

You need to look at the reason why the mail sits in the queue (you can find that on the queue) Deli
