EXCEL 2013 x64 crashes when creating a smooth line scatter plot with markers

This issue has only appeared in the day or so.

When creating a scatter plot of data in excel with smooth lines and markers, excel crashes.

Repeats every time.

Following youtube clips shows the behaviour (not my clip but it shows the same as my system). It was only posted 2 days ago as well.

Had a recent update, not sure yet if excel was updated at the same time.

Hello Skipalami,

Sounds like memory is scarce. Can you try close all other applications before running Excel? Do you have access to another computer with more RAM you can try this on?

Hi Skipalami,

Based on the error log "Faulting module path: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ntdll.dll", it might be caused by some reasons:

1. Excel crash with some add-in installed, such as ABBYY FineReader. Please see the similar thread:

http://community.office365.com/en-us/f/172/t/201014.aspx

2. Corrupt Windows user profile, we could create a new Windows User Account / profile and verify the results.

3 Non-Microsoft application / service conflicting with the Office application

Enable Clean-boot using the steps given here and then open the Office applications to verify the status. Clean Boot helps to eliminate the software conflicts.

Note: once the troubleshooting is done, enable Normal Start-up.

If the issue still exists, we need to collect the App crash dump file to do further troubleshooting.

First enable app crash dump collection by copying following words into notepad, saving it as dump.reg and importing it:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting\localdumps\EXCEL.EXE]

"DumpFolder"=hex(2):63,00,3a,00,5c,00,63,00,72,00,61,00,73,00,68,00,64,00,75,\

  00,6d,00,70,00,73,00,00,00

"DumpCount"=dword:00000010

"DumpType"=dword:00000001

"CustomDumpFlags"=dword:00000000

Then, open Excel to repro the issue. If crash issue appeared, please find the crashdump file under c:\.

You can try to analyze dump by yourself if you would like to

How to analyze app crash dump file:

I am also having this same issue. This is a debilitating bug and it only appeared after I installed a bunch of office 2013 updates on 12/13.

I'm happy to provide any additional information that would be helpful and I'm willing to try some suggestions.

I am also suffering from this issue with Excel 2013 x64.  Excel completely crashes, no warning/error message.

Persists after clean reboot etc.

Also running Windows 8.1.

Same problem here (Win8.1, Excel 2013) ... so far my solution is to run Excel in Safe mode.

Window +R

Excel.exe /safe

December 23rd, 2014 6:55pm

I get the same issue even in safe mode.  I select the data to plot click on INSERT and then choose one of the Scatter Plot options the program crashes.

Hi Skipalami,

I can also reproduce this bug and have found a work around.

Select an empty cell and insert a scatter chart. It should work.

Then, select data by contextual menu.

It works for me.

Thanks for this workaround. I've been experiencing the same crashes with the same error reports, and this workaround let me get around that for the time being.

Seems like this is happening on 8.1 64x excel 2013 only. I tried same thing on 7 and it worked fine.

I'm also having the same problem. Mid-February and still no fix for this?

Microsoft, common now. Windows is your product and so is Excell..... Why don't they like each other anymore?

I'll keep checking back here but it doesn't seem like there is a lot of urgency or any progress being made on this item.

The workaround is not a solution. For now it works but this is pretty lame.
February 16th, 2015 1:37pm

I've got the same problem (8.1, x64, Excel 2013) and can confirm that there's no problem on my wife's Windows 7.

fredmagi's work-around works for me but I'm teaching students how to make scatter plots and I don't want to teach them to create a graph from a blank cell and then add data.

I'm not even teaching them smoothed plots, I'm just teaching regular scatter plots and sometimes my mouse slips over the smoothed icon and everything crashes.

Come on Microsoft - fix this!

Yes- that is the most annoying thing: that if you just accidentally mouse over the smooth scatter plot with marker option, the program immediately dies.

Excel crashes on Windows 8.1 x64 when plotting more than one data series, particularly when series are different size and I try to change the plot type the program hangs and shows a black screen.
The only way to solve the problem is to remove the other series and leaving only one.

Same issue and it's April.  I'm running 8.1 64x with Office 365 Pro Plus.  Everything else works fine, but as soon as I hover over that plot (which is what I need for this graph) it crashes.  Should note that I have ample Ram and CPU power (16gb, i7-4710HQ), so it is definitely a software issue.

Workaround of creating a plot with a blank cell selected and then adding the data does work, but it is a very weird bug.

How do we understand if this bug is being worked by MS?  Installing 32-bit is not a solution nor an option for some company owned machines.  I am having this same issue on a company and personal laptop, both Windows 8.1, both 64-bit, one Dell one Lenovo, both crashing when trying to create the smooth-lines scatterplot even with Live Preview disabled.  Thank you in advance for your response.

Same for me. Windows 8.1 64-bit, Excel 2013. Crashes Excel every time I hover over scatter with lines icon.

Just noticed it today today before I did most recent OS updates.  I use straight line scatters more often and they are fine.  The persistent crash is completely irritating ... almost as irritating as Microsoft's lack of responsiveness.
