ESEUTIL
I have a dedicated storage group and database for my juornal mailbox. I expected the database to grow at an accellerated rate due to the journaling. I am using Quest Archive Manager and this product automatically empties this mailbox and put the journal mail in the archive so the mailbox is always empty. The problem I am having is running an offline dfrag on the database I took the database offline and ran eseutil /d on the edb file but it did not shrink. I checked the 1221 event in the application log and it states I have 2430 MB free. How can I get this database to shrink. I am having a similar problem with my Public folder database as well. The database "JournalLogs\JournalDB" has 2430 megabytes of free space after online defragmentation has terminated. Usually I reduce the days in "Keep deleted items for (days)" for archiving/journal mailbox since mailbox is already being archived to another place we don't have to keep dumpster items. Usually EDB file size = Mailbox size + Dumpster items size + White space. So here you need to decrease the days in the setting which I mentioned and wait for the online maintanance to run and cleanup dumpster items and mark it as a white space. Mailbox Database Properties > Limits Tab http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997267.aspx Once you have enough white space coming in 1221 event then you can go for Eseutil /d defragmentation because it is the aprox amount can be reduced during defrag.
