Duration of Database Move in E2K3
Hello,I need to move one of my Exchange 2003 databases to a larger volume since it's almost filled up the current one. Before I do this, I'd like to know approximately how long it'll take so I can set the proper expectations for the outage window. The EDB file is 360GB and the STM file is 145GB. I know these are precariously large sizes; that's why I'm currently working on a project to address this issue; but I have the more pressing need to move this particular database before it completely fills up the volume. I've been searching, but so far haven't been able to find any information to help estimate how long moving these files will take. Can anyone provide guidance on this? Also, the current volume where these files reside only has 12GB of free space left. Will that pose a problem when trying to move the files, i.e., is there a miminum amount of head room required on the source volume during the move?Lastly, a sanity check - after moving the files over, I'll be confirming the permissions on the target (new) folder, and changing the Working Directory registry value to the new path. Is there anything else I need to do before remounting the database? Thanks in advance for any guidance!

Hi, Please understand that the move database is just a process to dismount the database, copy the database and remount the database. Thus, it is a simply copy process. The duration of move database is according to your disk I/O speed and Network speed if the move process across network. For detailed steps to move database, you can refer to the following article: Note: I suggest that you make a full backup before move database How to move Exchange databases and logs in Exchange Server 2003 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/821915/en-us You can also manually move database according to the following KB article: How to manually move the database file location in Exchange 2000 Server and Exchange Server 2003 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822676/en-us Mike

I kicked off the move of the larger (EDB) file, came back to it 10 hours later, and it was done. Then I kicked off the STM file move, came back 3 hours later, and it was done. Since I used ESM to move the files, the store mounted automatically after copying over the files. There was no issue due to the small amount of free space on the source volume.

Hello, I need to move one of my Exchange 2003 databases to a larger volume since it's almost filled up the current one. The EDB file is 74GB and the STM file is 35GB, the current volume where these files reside only has 12GB of free space left. Will that pose a problem when trying to move the files, i.e., is there a minimum amount of head room required on the source volume during the move? I tried to move STM file to alternate location using EMC and Manual process but both are filed with error insufficient resources to perform this operation. KB’s followed: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822676/en-us http://support.microsoft.com/kb/821915/en-us Try to copy Database and stream files to using xcpoy it’s also failed please advice…. :( Thanks in advance for any guidance! Thanks, GJ
