Downtime while moving exchange 2003 Databases ( .edb and .stm )
Hi everyone, We're using Exchange 2003 in our organisation. Our back-ends servers ( were the mailbox resides ) are configured in a cluster. I am planning to move a database to another location by following this Microsoft article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/821915/en-us This is goingto cause adowntime for my users since the database have to be dismounted. My question is this: How long does it take to move a Database ? The .edb file is 18 Go and the .stm file is 7 Go. I know that this may depend on various factors ( like the hardware ) but I would liketo just have anidea so that I can inform my users, evenif I intend to do it off work hours. Can some of you tell me about your experiences ? Thanks to all of you for your help. Regards, Weezeewig

Yes you will have downtime because you need to take the Database offline. The move is actually a copy of the actual files itself. So you should calculate howlong it takes to copy the files using windows explorer, the time to move the databases as specified in the article should be very similar to that time. (maybe a little bit longer because of little extra exchange management, maximum a few minutes longer) You should allways do this during none working hours Deli

Thank you Deli-Pro Exchange. I did move a .edb file and a .stm file. It took about 1 minute for every 3 GB. We're running our servers on ProLiant G4, 4 GB RAM, Dual-Processor. Our San is a EVA3000 from HP. Thanks again.

I've tried the process in the above mentioned article a couple of times and after an hour or so the program stops and task manager shows (not responding). The .edb is 45Gb and the .stm is 11.5Gb. When I look at the destination folder, the .edb copies completely (according to the size of the file) but the .stm doesn't copy at all. I tried moving them one at a time, .edb then .stm or .stm then .edb and get the same result. Any thoughts or suggestions? Don
