Does Exchange Server Require SMTP Service
I have Exchange Server 2007 running on Windows Server 2008. I have been having some problems with the server rejecting emails and I wanted to turn on SMTP logging. I could not find SMTP in the Admin Services. When I opened Server Manager and selected Add Features, SMTP Server was not checked. My exchange server is working. We are able to send and receive emails. Two Questions: One, how can Exchange work without SMTP services. Two, how can I trace an email that is being sent from my exchange server to another email server?

Yes the SMTP protocol is used, but it is handled by the Microsoft Exchange Transport service. How to Configure Message Tracking http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997984%28EXCHG.80%29.aspx

Hello, Exchange 2007 has its own transport engine and does not require the Windows SMTP server to be installed. Exchange 2003 does use the Windows SMTP server. Edit: Enable Message Tracking on your Hub Transport servers if you want to track email. You can also enable SMTP logging as well: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124531(EXCHG.80).aspx

Hi,In Exchange 2007, the Microsoft Exchange Transport service is the new SMTP service which does not depend on the underlying Windows Server / IIS technology. The service depends on the Microsoft Exchange Active Directory Topology service. To trace the email, you can enable the Protocol logging on the Send Connector. The log path is C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\TransportRoles\Logs\ProtocolLogThanksAllen
