Do i defrag a mailstore that I just moved users to?
I have a client that has 100gb mailbox database and he wants to defrag the store. Im creating (3) new mailbox databases and then will move certain users to certain databases to divide the storage up. This should give us mailbox databases that look like this: main database: ~25gb New database 1: ~25gb New database 2: ~25gb New database 3: ~25gb Then I will defrag the main database. But my question is should i defrag the new databases too? will they need defraging since i moved mailboxes over to them? Thanks for shedding any light to the subject, im not much of a database expert.Brad Nelson MCSE/DCSE/A+/Network+/WCSP

Nope, no need to do an offline defrag of the new databases. Exchange will take care of itself during online maintenance.

it may be worth you actually creating another DB to move the users off the main database and then delete the main one. Defrag can take a lot of time and can fail. This way you'll have 4 new databases which wont require a offline defrag. Sukh

An offline defrag will require total downtime of the server. If you have capacity for additional mailboxes then just create a replacement, move the data and then drop the original. Zero downtime, zero risk. An offline defrag is not risk free. Simon.Simon Butler, Exchange MVP Blog | Exchange Resources | In the UK? Hire Me.

I like this idea. The reason i was doing a defrag was the client says he deleted tons of emails from each user but the size of the mail store hasnt dropped. But i agree the mailbox move would be smarter to do and get rid of the original.Brad Nelson MCSE/DCSE/A+/Network+/WCSP

Brad Nelson MCSE/DCSE/A+/Network+/WCSP If you remove the first store, be aware that you will need to restart the System Attendant service so the System Attendant mailbox can be recreated on another store.
