Do I really need an Edge Transport Server?
My office has less than 50 people. I'm thinking of uninstalling the Edge Transport server and letting ISA Server expose the Internal Hub Transport server as an SMTP server. Is there something wrong with this? Would Exchange Server 2007 function perfectly well without an Edge Transport server installed in the organization? Should I take special precautions or go through a certain procedure (other than unsubscribing the Edge server from the Hub server) before uninstalling the Edge Transport server? Thank you, Sammy

Hi Sammy, First off, as Exchange 2007 has not actually been released, I'm assumingthat your actually on a TAP/Early Adoption program, or else you wouldn't be doing this in production... right? In response to your questions: No, theres nothing wrong with this. Yes, it will function fine. Nope, unsubscribe from the Edge server and then uninstall. If you're going to expose your Hub Transport server through ISA, then you'll need to allow the Hub Transport server to accept annonymous connections, or else you'll not be able to receive mail. To do this run the following command on the Hub Transport server: Set-ReceiveConnector -Identity "Default <YourServerName>" -PermissionGroups "AnonymousUsers" You'll also need to create/modify your Org's SendConnector to send from the Hub Transport server. If you want to use the Exchange 2007 Anti-spam agents on the Hub Transport server, you'll need to install them with the script in your Exchange\Scripts directory. Use the following command: C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\Scripts>install-AntispamAgents.msh You can then administer the Anti-spam feature from the Exchange Management Shell->Organisation Configuration->Hub Transport->AntiSpam Policies. Hope this helps, Rob
