Distribution List Not Showing in GAL
Using the Exchange Management Console in 2007 I created a new Distribution List and added some users to it. It is showing up under All Address Lists > All Groups. But it is not showing up under the Global Address List. How can I get it to show up under the GAL? Thanks,

I'm guessing you're trying to view the GAL with Outlook in cached mode, and you're just suffering from the normal OAB update delay. Exchange, by default, updates the OAB once daily, at night, and Outlook only grabs the updated OAB once a day at some time of its own choosing. You could just wait for the update to make it to your Outlook sometime tomorrow, or you could increase the frequency of OAB updates, wait for one to occur, and then manually download the new OAB in Outlook. -Peter

Outlook in cached mode need a interval to update the address book. Could you find the group in OWA or outlook online mode? Did you create the distribute list follow the below steps? EMC>Recipient Configuration>Distribution Group>New Distribution Groups> EMC>Organization Configuration>Mailbox>Offline Address book>Default OAB>Update Your expertise never fails to impress!

Hi, To add to others. If you are having problem in seeing the DL in the Outlook OAB then u either wait for 1 day, so that OAB is generated on Exchange server and OL client downloads it, OR just manually generate the OAB on exchange server using 3 easy steps mentioned here "Manually Generating Offline Address Book on Exchange 2007/2010 " and then just manaually download the OAB in OL using "Send Receive->Download Address Book" option. Thanks all, it has been a day since I created the groups so I am hopeful they will show up soon. It is really weird to me that they show up under the All Groups list right away but not under the GAL. I will let you know if they dont show up and thanks!

They have still not shown up in the GAL only under the address book > all address lists > all groups. Is there a particular setting I can look into? Thanks, ----- Edit they have shown up on one persons outlook when I recreated their outlook profile. Will outlook eventually refresh automatically or do I need to manually update everyones outlook?

Hi, Are u looking into OWA or outlook? In OWA there must not be a problem, while in Outlook there could be a problem if either your OAB failed to generate or its daily generation schedule is still away. If its Outlook then try to manually generate the OAB using steps mentioned in my last link and then see. Also see the event viewer of MBX server if there are any errors regarding the OAB generation. You need to check that group to see if it is part of the address list that is in the OAB. If not, you need to make sure that it is. When you recreate a user, it may not have the OAB yet and hence it is going directly online and hence that is always good. But once it downloads the OAB, you may have the problem again.

Hi, Please try below steps : following command in the Exchange Management Shell. Get-GlobalAddressList | Format-List Name,*RecipientFilter*,ExchangeVersion This command lists detailed information on the Global Address Book. To view information on all of the other address books on your Exchange 2007 server issue the following command: Get-AddressList | Format-List Name,*RecipientFilter*,ExchangeVersion Both of the above commands will display the following Address Book attributes: Name RecipientFilter LdapRecipientFilter LastUpdatedRecipientFilter RecipientFilterApplied RecipientFilterType ExchangeVersion If the RecipientFilterType is set to Legacy that means that the Address book has not been upgraded to the Exchange 2007 format. Below is the command that I ran to correct this issue: Set-GlobalAddressList "Default Global Address List" -RecipientFilter {(Alias -ne $null -and (ObjectClass -eq 'user' -or ObjectClass -eq 'contact' -or ObjectClass -eq 'msExchSystemMailbox' -or ObjectClass -eq 'msExchDynamicDistributionList' -or ObjectClass -eq 'group' -or ObjectClass -eq 'publicFolder'))} While all of our other Address Books had been upgraded, you will need to ensure that you upgrade all of the Address Books on your Exchange 2007 server.
