Distribution List - Manage Permissions
I added a new distribution list via the Exchange 2007 Management Console and set the Managed by to the distribution list owner. One would think that would mean that the person would be granted the ability to change membership....to my surprise NO. WT?? How completely idoitic is that? Did a search....found a possible match but got: Unknown Error We apologize, but an unknown error has occurred in the forums. This error has been logged. Anyway any help would be appreciated...as I assume once my Exchange 2003 servers are gone I won't have the ablility to change this via ADUC (unless I use my local E2003 tools). Sorry if this seems like a rant....thanks in advance.

I agree that sometimes none of us can really understand what is going inside of Microsoft's collective heads. When they take away a feature that was once used by their customers, at least. Within my own organization, we use the Managed By feature extensively (every DL has an owner that manages the membership of their own lists). I'm assuming that since Microsoft internally does not use this feature (they have a web-based solution) they figure we don't need it either. In E2K3, the Managed By tab included a "Manager Can Update Membership List" checkbox which essentially gave the owner some special permissions on the DL list object. The new E2K7 GUI does NOT included that option. You can duplicate it, though, in Active Directory Users and Computers, after you create the group (make sure that you have the Advanced Features view enabled), go to the Security property page, click Add, click Advanced, and then click Add. Give the user that needs to manage the DL membership the Allow permissions for the "Write Members" permission. It is a pain to do the extra step, but you will get the same functionality. I really should blog this.....
