Display Name has correct email address but Email Address is formatted incorrectly
Hi. We received an inbound email from a customer but when we reply to it, the email address is using our domain name of our exchange server. For example, when we receive the email from the customer and reply it, the display name is displayed correctly (i.e. Bob.Barker@priceisright.com) BUT the email address is incorrect (i.e. "Bob Barker"@acmewidgets.com) The acmewidgets.com is the domain name of our email server which is correct. Is Exchange doing changing the email address format or is that Outlook doing that? Server is Exchange Server 2003 with SP2. Outlook client is 2010. Any help is appreciated. - Simon.

The email address will always be what the primary smtp address is set in Exchange so that's expected. What it seems like is that you just have mismatching smtp and display name. If you need the email to come out as @acmewidges.com then go into the user account, email tab and change the primary address to bob.barker@priceisright.com.James Chong MCITP | EA | EMA; MCSE | M+, S+ Security+, Project+, ITIL msexchangetips.blogspot.com

Hi James. Let me clarify with this example. Sue.Barker@priceisright.com sends an email to Simon@acmewidgets.com. In her email, in the CC: is Bob.Barker@priceisright.com where is Display Name is "Bob.Barker@priceisright.com" BUT for E-mail address nothing is associated to it. When I reply to Sue's email, I can see Sue.Barker@priceisright.com (both Display Name and E-mail address are the same and correct as Sue.Barker@priceisright.com) BUT it's not correct for Bob Barker. His Display Name is "Bob.Barker@priceisright.com" but his Email address is literally "Bob.Barker"@acmewidgets.com I am confused on where Exchange is translating this incorrect or is it Outlook that's doing it? Hope this more clear. - Simon.

That's expected behavior, the user will always resolved to what the display name is in the GAL if the user is authenticated. James Chong MCITP | EA | EMA; MCSE | M+, S+ Security+, Project+, ITIL msexchangetips.blogspot.com

It's more likely the information sent in the first place is malformed. Does this happen with mail sent from any other domain?

Hi, As James said, if the user is authenticated, the user always can resolve to what the display name is in the GAL. So have you had any update? Thanks Sophia

This problem is only happening from this one domain. So is there an easy way to check to see if the user that's sending the email is malformed? Is there a way to easily see this in Outlook?

Is there a way to see if this address is in the GAL?

Hi, Sorry for so late to reply. According to your analysis, the CC name ‘Bob.Barker’ has set to changed actual email address domain name ‘acmewidgets.com’ to ‘priceisright.com’ using recipient policy in Exchange server so the sender and recipient see that it is in correct. Actually, it is a kind of email policy. If the user is authenticated, the user always can resolve to what the display name is in the GAL. Hope this helps.
