Disconnected Mailbox
I have a user that had a mailbox disconnected by mistake. Rather than just reconnecting the mailbox, a new one was created and the user received several e-mails in that mailbox. The new mailbox has now been disabled, and he is reconnected to his original mailbox. The problem I have is that I need to get the e-mail out of the mailbox that is in the disconnected mailbox area. I tried to connect the mailbox to a new AD account so I can export the contents. But, it wont let me connect becuase the exchange legacy DN is the same as the mailbox he is currently connected to. How do I get the e-mail out of the mailbox that is disconnected if I cant connect it to a AD account?

The problem I have is that I need to get the e-mail out of the mailbox that is in the disconnected mailbox area. How important is that mail? If it was backed up, a Recovery Storage Group might work (you could merge, I think, into the current mailbox). But that's a significant operation, that the value of the mail may or may not justify. Note: I've never practiced a RSG operation in your exact circumstances, so I'm not sure if the legacyDN would be a problme there as well.

If LDN is creating an issue, change the LDN of the actual user on the local DC which exchange is connected. Reconnect the mailbox to a temp account. Change the LDN of the temp account from the local DC. Change the LDN back to the original for the actual account. A small amount of risk is involved in this as the mails which are coming while we perform this activity may get bounced. Good luck Shaba

Hi, This is the step by step guide for connecting the disable mailbox to another AD user object: 1. Run AdsiEDIT.msc, expand to DC=domain,DC=com;DC=users;DC=userAlias, right click DC=userAlias and choose properties. 2. locate the "LegacyExchangeDN", change the value. For example, the original value is /O=First Organization /OU=First Administrative Group/CN=RECIPIENTS/CN=username, you can change the value to /O=<var>First Organization </var>/OU=First Administrative Group/CN=RECIPIENTS/CN=username123 3. Then connect the disabled mailbox to a temp account. 4. Log into this mailbox and then import the mails. 5. Remove the temp account and mailbox. 6. Change the LegacyExchangeDN value back. Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread. Thanks
