In the 2007/2010 world, disabling a mailbox means disconnecting it from the AD account its linked to and removing the mail attributes , so no mail will be delivered to it. If you disable the AD account, it can still receive mail.

You should be able to. Resource Mailboxes, for example, are disabled accounts. ( if the mailbox has been removed form the AD account, then no)

If the mailbox is disabled, then that means its no longer associated with an AD account and not-mail enabled and will purged from the store after the deleted mailbox retention time has expired ( default 30 days). If you need to view it, you should reconnect it to an AD account.

so the end result is that you can view an additional mailbox as long as you have: 1 permission 2 mailbox is enabled 3 associated user account can be disabled or enabled ( does not make a difference )

l purged from the store after the deleted mailbox retention time has expired ( default 30 days) Why does this happen since I was going only to disable it and not delete it ?

l purged from the store after the deleted mailbox retention time has expired ( default 30 days) Why does this happen since I was going only to disable it and not delete it ? Because disabling a mailbox means disconnecting it from its AD account and removing its Exchange attributes. Its the first step to removing the mailbox from the store either manually or allowing it be removed after the deleted item retention time has expired. Disabling a mailbox also means you can reconnect it to another AD account. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997210.aspx
