Directory Service is unavailable in Mailbox Server 2007 SP3
Dear Sir, I am trying to open Exchange Management Console in Mail box server then I got a error message that the "directory service unavailable" Whereas in CAS/HT server I can see the Mailbox and EMC is working fine. Just to let you know we had a problem in One of the DC's, I had demoted and cleaned the metadata last week. What could be the possible reasons for this error. Appreciate your expertise advise. ThanksEXCH ADMIN

Hi, Go to C:\Users\SAMACCOUNTNAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\MMC and delete "Microsoft Managment Console" and see if that helps. If it doesn't work, see KB945604 Martina Miskovic

I am getting the following error message when trying to open EMC. I tried the above solution but it is not a user profile problem it seems. thanks & regards EXCH ADMIN

Ok, so when you log on using a different account you get the same error? Not sure if EMC picks up whatever is specificed when running $AdminSessionADSettings in EMS. You could try and change the settings you have there to a different DC and see what happends. See Paul Cunninghams blog post about it. http://exchangeserverpro.com/how-to-use-a-specific-domain-controller-in-the-exchange-2007-management-shellMartina Miskovic

Yes, this works. Thank you Martina, simply superb. I am elaborating little bit about the problem. Actually EMC is pointing to some other DC which is in different location connected over WAN link. Though the Server is legitimate, up and running the problem might be because of the slow network. I have gone through the link and defined the preferred Server settings to the local DC and tried to open EMC and boooom it works. Thank you once again to all who joined me and especially to Martina.EXCH ADMIN
