Difficulty determining outgoing mail settings
Hello, I'm trying to determine outgoing email settings on a 2003 Exchange server I did not set up. Please forgive the "newbie-ness" of this question, I've checked other forums and help, and am unsure how to find the info. Mails are getting bounced back when sending to certain domains (eg. @craigslist.org). with the message, "<xxxxdomain.net #5.7.1 smtp;554 5.7.1 <unknown[71.94.217.170]>: Client host rejected: rDNS/DNS_validation_failed._Please_setup_matching_DNS_and_rDNS_records:_http://www.craigslist.org/about/help/rdns_failure xabd-4>". I ran through the Internet and Email setup Wizard, selecting to not alter any settings, and came to see the following help info: "To check the current settings of your Exchange connectors, click Start, and then click Server Mangement. In the console tree, double-click on Advanced Management, double-click your Exchange Server, and then double-click Connectors. In the details pane, right-click the connector, and then click Properties." However, when I go to the Advanced Management, and look at the Exchagne server, I do not see any "connectors" entry. Any ideas based on the image presented here? Thanks. Running MS Windows Server 2003 for Small Business SP2. If anyone can point me to a useful resource, that would be great.

The error is unrelated to Exchange. It is a DNS issue. You need to speak to your ISP and get them to set a PTR on your external IP address. This is also known as a reverse DNS address. If they will not, or you are on a dynamic IP address, then you will have to configure Exchange though the wizard to use a smart host and enter the ISPs SMTP server. Thanks, Simon. I know it is a DNS issue. However, what I'm trying to determine is if this particular Exchange server is sending through DNS or SMTP; and if SMTP, then what the outgoing server is (whether it's the ISP or the email hosting service), so I can talk to the appropriate support dept. Mail is working well for the most part, so I don't want to go through and change settings and potentially jack things up - I just want to see what the settings are, so I can address the issue appropriately. The wizard does not provide information on the current settings when I go through it. Thanks again for your help! :-)

If you went through the wizard, it should have prepopulated the existing values for you. However looking at your screenshot, someone has enabled Admin Groups in ESM, which isn't necessary in SBS, so you need to expand Admin Groups, then the the Admin Group. There you should find Servers, Connectors etc. Going by the IP address that you have posted above, the DNS isn't configured correctly anyway. The IP address resolves to one host name, but that host name doesn't resolve to that IP address - it looks like it resolves to GoDaddy's email servers. The fix depends on whether you are using the POP3 connector or not. If you are, and wish to continue to do so, then you should configure a new host name in your DNS to point to your static IP address and ask the ISP to change it. If you are not using the POP3 connector, or wish to drop it and use SBS as it was designed - SMTP Delivery (if you have a static IP address this is the best way to use Exchange), then you need to get the DNS records configured correctly to point to your static IP address instead. Just FYI, I went with putting in a PTR with the ISP. It was very helpful, though, to find out where the connectors reside. Thanks again for your helpful responses.
