Difficulties with E2K7 Domain preparation
Background:1 Windows 2K Advanced Server had Exchange2K and all AD roles. (mail.mydomain.com) 1 Windows 2K Advanced Server is a backup domain Controller. I have installed 1 Windows 2K3R2 Server and transferred all domain roles to it. I have installed 1 Windows 2K3R2 Server and tring to install E2K7. Issue:All Steps have gone smooth with the exception that during Setup.com /PrepareAD I get an error that states "Setup encountered a problem while validating the state of Active Directory: Domain Controller 'mail.mydomain.com' Operating System version is 5.0 (2195) Service Pack 4. The minimum version required is 5.2 (3790) Service Pack 1." I know this is referring to Windows 2000 verses Windows 2K3, but I thought you could have a DC running 2000 as long as there were no FSMO Roles. Is my next step to demote the existing mail server from being a Domain Controller? What about my other DC running Windows 2K? I ran the following and still get the same errors. => setup.com /prepareschema /DomainController:Win2k3 GC servername. => Setup.exe /PrepareAD /DomainController:Win2k3 GC servername. => Setup.exe /PrepareDomains /DomainController:Win2k3 GC servername. Please see the install log below. Probabily a GC issue. The 2000 server is probabily running the Global catalog role. If so remove it. Force a sync or give it time to sync. Also you might want to check where the schema master role is located. Check out the article http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/1e80857c-b870-4a6d-a0f4-ff7b3a7be037.aspx The domain controller that is the schema master must have Microsoft WindowsServer2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or a later version installed. (By default, the schema master runs on the first WindowsServer2003domain controller installed in a forest.) You must have at least one global catalog server in every ActiveDirectorydirectory service site where you plan to install Exchange2007. This global catalog server must be running WindowsServer2003 SP1 or a later version.WindowsServer2003 SP1 or a later version is required for the following reasons: WindowsServer2003 SP1 and later versions supportExchange2007 service notifications. When a configuration change occurs in ActiveDirectory,a notification is sent to the service. Several Exchange2007 services use this notification. The notification mechanism in WindowsServer2003SP1 and later versionsis an improvement over the notification mechanism in Windows2000Server. WindowsServer2003 SP1 and later versionsallow users to browse the address book in MicrosoftOutlookWebAccess. WindowsServer2003 SP1 and later versionsprovide the ability to look up distribution list membership in a more efficient manner than in Windows2000Server.

LLTJ, I thought it may have been a GC issue, but I have 2 GC's in the domain and one is W2K3 R2 SP2. The error is showing on a server that is not running GC. The Schema Master is W2K3. These updates were done yesterday and replmon.exe does not show any replication errors. Ugh. Jeff

Unfortunately I have not been able to get any answers online by installing E2k7 using the GUI. I have had this same problem on two installations that were mixed mod domains (2000 and 2003 mixed) No matter if I have all my FSMO roles on my 2k3 DC and no 2k GC's out there, I still can not get the setup to figure out that I have a 2k3 DC that is suitable for installation. After calling MS Support they gave me the command lines to install this program and point it to the proper DC to look at. This is still the only way i have been able to get it installed. I normally use the setup.exe gui interface to get all my prereqs checked and installed if needed. THen once I only have the one error showing up stating what you said in the original message, I do the following commands: setup.com /preparead /dc:<servername> Once that finishes I do: setup /m:Install /roles:M,HT,C,MT /dc:<your2k3DC>/EnableLegacyOutlook /LegacyRoutingServer:<oldexch2kserver> /t:"d:\program files\Microsoft\Exchange Server" /EnableErrorReporting Now there may be some differences on your command line arguments but this worked like a champ. It's pretty lame though that a brand new product would be released in this manner. I was told by support that SP1 for E2k7 is supposed to address this issue, however how is that supposed to help people who have the DVD w/o SP1?!?! Anyway...hope this helps. Louis
