Dial Tone Portability Help!
Hi all, We have one exchange 2007 server with CAS/HUB and mailbox roles installed at the corp site. Now, we decide to setup one Exchange 2007 CAS/HUB/MBX server to use Dial Tone Portability in the DR site. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997656(EXCHG.80).aspx if the corp site is down. Currently, we only use one mail.mycompany.com certificate instead of SAN certificate. Do we need the seperate certificate for DR server and can we export the ceritificate and import to the CAS server in DR site? >from the link and states "With the Outlook 2007 and Exchange 2007 Autodiscover service, clients are redirected to the new server when they try to connect," How? if the CAS/HUB/MBX is down due to outage in corp site, how can outllok 2007 be redirected to the new server when they try to connect? Thank you!

The assumption there is that AD/DNS is intact. The internal clients will find the new server only after you have modified their AD mailbox configuration to point to the new server per: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998340(EXCHG.80).aspx and the autodiscover URLs correctly point to the DR Client Access Servers. The certificate subject names in the DR site on the CAS should match the autodiscover URLs you define.

we only use one mail.mycompany.com certificate at the corp site. set autodiscover to use mail.mycompany.com . can we use the one cert for DR site too? Thank you.

Sure, if you bring up the DR site, DNS ( internal and external if required)would need to changed so that mail.mycompany.com now points to the DR site.

Thank you. in Exchange 2003, when dealing with dial tone, use Exmerge to merge new data in the alternate server to the server in corp site when the Exchange server is up. Can we still use Exmerge in Exchange 2007 when we need to bring the new data in the alternate server to the corp site's Exchange server? Thank you for your help.

Hi, In Exchange 2007, there is no need to use Exmerge. You can follow these documents to export and import mailbox data. How to Import Mailbox Data http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb691363(EXCHG.80).aspx How to Export Mailbox Data http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb266964(EXCHG.80).aspx How to Export and Import mailboxes to PST files in Exchange 2007 SP1 http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2007/04/13/437745.aspx Thanks, EvanPlease remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. I just tried out export-mailbox or import-mailbox on the server, it says that I have to use 32bit shell with outlook installed? Does it mean that I have to install exchange shell on XP machine?

Yes, xp with 32bit exchange management tool only with outlook. In order to export or import mailboxes to PST files the following requirements must be met: Export/Import to PST must be run from a 32 bit client machine with Exchange Management Tools installed (Version Exchange 2007 SP1 or later). The 32bit requirement comes from a dependency with the Outlook client. Either Outlook 2003 or Outlook 2007 must be installed on the client machine. The user running the task must be an Exchange Organization Admin or an Exchange Server Admin on the server where the mailbox to export/import lives. http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2007/04/13/437745.aspxJames Chong MCITP | EA | EMA; MCSE | M+, S+ Security+, Project+, ITIL msexchangetips.blogspot.com

Thank you and supposed that we active dial tone database on the alternate server and users continue to receive and send mails but no old mails. Now, the original server is back and we need to swap new data on the alternate server to the original server. Should I use export/import to merge data into users' mailboxes? Is there a way to export according to database? (that means that I need to iinstall tool on the seperate box) Exmerge makes things much easier. Are there altenate way to do this? Some people mention to use swap dial done database through recovery management console but I do not see it in the database recovery console? Also, you can only create recovery group at one time, then swap dial tone database. If we have 20 database, is it not pratical to use? Thank you for your help.

For swapping database on the dial tone server to the RSG, only in the DB in the RSG when swapping needs to dismount, not all DBs? Right? Is that ture that we can only create one RSG at one time? Thank you.
