Design Activesynch service
Hi, We're using few different mobile mail solutions (BB, nokia 3rd, ericsson 3rd, ...) for last 3-4 years. Now, due corportate policy we have to move all devices to activesynch platform. I don't have any expirience with activesynch. On corp site we have Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2007, with mixed users on both of them. I need to prepare documentation: - what to prepare on server side (Exchange, firewall, AD) - how to use it on mobile devices, which devices are supported - how to manage service from server (is there any console....)? Thnx

Hi, Well, links are for mobile device side, I'm interested to find solution documents for server side, implementation and security policy, and management devices from server. Regards.

Without using a third party tool, there isn't much management. That only really came with Exchange 2010. For Exchange 2003 you are pretty much restricted to the policies in ESM and being able to remote wipe the device. Things get a little better in Exchange 2007, giving you more policy control. However ActiveSync is licenced to other vendors, and it is up to them what they implement. The only way you get the fully policy control is by using Windows Mobile based devices. No single list of supported devices - you have to look for ActiveSync support. Windows Mobile of course, the iPhone, some Nokia models, some Sony Ericsson models, I think LG have a few. There are third party apps that will give ActiveSync support on Blackberry devices. If you are expecting BES type management, then you are going to be very disappointed, as there is nothing from Microsoft for that. As for firewall - that is easy. It all runs over port 443. If you already have OWA setup and running with commercial certificates then almost all of the configuration work is done. Hi Sembee, That was very detailed. Exchange - hm, not very useful administration. I don't expect BB management, but for a moment I can't see ActiveSynch connected users, except get details from log file which takes 30-60 mins and it's ona way job - for next report it takes another 60 min. Which 3rd tools are good for management? SC Mobile device manager? anything else or better? There will be definatelly more non-windows mobile device (android, iphone ....) so it's mixed environment for managing. Regards.

Zenprise have a product, but I haven't used it so cannot recommend it either way. With Exchange 2003, it is all manual. ActiveSync was very much a bolt on to Exchange 2003. The previous variant of ActiveSync (which used text messages) was close to useless outside of the USA so Microsoft had to come up with something else. Hence the lack of management tools. It got better with Exchange 2007, but there is still no central admin console for it. Something could probably be written because the information is there in Powershell. Exchange 2010 puts the management of the devices in to the user's hands through OWA. So it is getting there, but management of a large mobile fleet will be difficult without third party assistance.
