I didnt realize i had right clicked on the actual folder containing the distribution lists and deleted the entire folder which included all distribution lists. can i get this back, without restoring entire exchange environment from backup? Thanks in advance.

I couldnt get the OU to restore, so i had to do the following: i recreated the OU from AD by right clicking on parent OU and selecting new>organizational unit.. after i recreated the OU, i was able to restore the individual objects (distribution lists) using LDP.exe. each object restored had lost its exchange email settings so..i then had to right click on the object, exchange tasks, and "remove exchange attributes". i then had to right click on the object, exchange tasks, and "establish email address on groups". this recreated the email side of the object. each object restored had lost its members as well. so i had to re propagate those entrys.
